AF16 block build

Post by Mystic »

I found another motor and just couldnt refuse a great deal :D I designate this build as my winter project. I havent taken any pictures yet because just about everyone has seen a bare block before. when i got this thing the guy had already stripped it down to a bare block except RUSTED crank, stator, flywheel, trans, and rear rim. This thing had apparently sat outside for years with the rain pooling in the crankcase, bearings and crank completely rusted. Not sure if i can use the crank because of all the rust pitting but i did manage to clean it up and free the bearings even though they are noisy :P i have wire brushed every piece to a shine and placed them in a box as I gather all the other necessary parts. Recieved a package yesterday with ANOTHER bare block :D Contained within was the block minus all but the crank, flywheel, stator, and most of the trans luckily i had the missing gear for a future build. In the box was the entire drive train, belt, kicker, aftermarket shock, mount, starter, and other misc parts. cracked this case to get the crank and bearings and cleaned it up and stored the cases. Bearings are good and the crank is clean other than a few flattened threads on the flywheel side :P Placed an order with powersportsplus.com for the seals and other misc bolts and gaskets I need which I will trace onto gasket material for future builds especially the trans gasket. I plan to lay all the parts out today and get some pics, make a checklist the rest of the parts i need and sort bolts from the bolt bin :D Dont even know what I am going to actually put this motor in yet if all else fails I have the stock Spree to mutilate :D

Thanks taz, I was thinking about going ministroker with 72cc polini or equivalent but dont have the funds atm, i am going to try and at least find a ministroker if i can so i dont have to crack the case or save my 2000 af16 block for all that. I have lots of options on this build but am limited by monies :D gathering up all the required pieces and brushing bolts currently. I have been noticing slight difference in the 94 af16 and the 2000 af16 engines like slightly different stock variator and the differences in the transmission. The 94 has the bearing in the trans cover and the 2000 doesnt and the gasket is a different part number. Will research that further. Too a few pics of what I have so far. I know for sure I need the flywheel side engine /fan cover, a stock head, and stock main needle so if anyone has those items shoot me a pm :D Now I gotta look at the parts list and match bolt sizes. I keep all my bolts in a bucket I figure about the only thing i can use from tearing down the sprees are the bolts :D Also contemplating trying to use the spree motor mount but that is a good way off gotta get the engine built first.

Here are the variators, the one on the right is from a 94 sa50p and hte one on the left is from a 2000 sa50? , since it has no holes to screw on the restriction plate I can only assume this is from an sa50 , going to look at some parts lists and figure this out. You can definately see a difference between the 2 and they both have wear differently were the belts rode. The 94 doesnt ride as far out as the 2000 but the 2000 doesnt have hardly in wear on the inside as opposed to heavy wear on the 94. Also the 2000 isnt quite as wide as the one for the 94. Just an observation

--I looked at the parts lists and all of them have the movable drive face seal bolted to the back of the variator, what i want to know is why is this one different i know its not aftermarket cause it has HM stamped in it.

Greetings:

Honda abandoned the o-ring back cover and greased rollers somewhere between '94 and 2001. The variators didn't need the tapped screw holes or the groove for the o-ring. Plus Honda-san's always monkeying with parts and details, making things better. Peruse your favorite dealer's parts fiche for when the part numbers changed if you're burning to know.

Finally got my seals and misc bolts in the mail. Got the seals installed today and made the crankcase gasket. Now I gotta work on the crankshaft. Previous owner tried to disassemble without success squishing the first 2 threads on the flywheel side. Shouldnt be to hard to fix :D imma get that fixed and the crankcase bolted together for today.

There should not be a gasket between case halves on a af16

i always tell people when buying a "dio" motor make sure on the gear case cover it says "AF16" Another good indicator is the bore, the exhaust is not straight out, its to the side. Many times I have seen people bring me motors to port and build for them and its not .
if it is a real one awesome find!

The early af18 has small crank need paper crankcase only. Later on af16/18 block use Gasket silicone

Honda didn't design it to be used with a gasket, use of one will allow to much play for the crank minimal as it would seem. also may make it impossible or extremely hard to get all 4 of the head bolts in. would put sideway stress on the connecting rod due to crank moving back and forth. Just use Honda bond, thats all thats required.

Yup exactly.. Use a silicone gasket.

The right side of crank case is a wrong seal doesn't sound right..

alright I will follow you guys advice on this one though I hate to use that silicone crap :P good thing it was hard as * for me to get the crank back in the cases :D I got it almost beat back together but i left about a 1/4th of an inch between the 2 cases cause I was tired of beating on it with a mallet hahha
