Dead 87 SE50P

Post by Mystic »

I took a break from cleaning up the 94 sa50 I got for free yesterday to go pick up an 87 se50p :D The guy that gave me the scoot yesterday called me and was like there is one like i gave you on CL they just put it up so I had to check it out of course. As soon as I saw it I was like sweet, I told him it was an 87 se50 and he was like how do you know that? lol so I sent and email with no response so I sent another email with my phone number. This le old lady called me this morning so I arranged to pick it up for $75 bucks. On the phone she said the rear panels where there but when i got there they couldnt find them so I was like if you find them let me know and I will come back, they had a bunch of sheds and stuff full with motorcycles sitting here and there :D Either way it is all to the good. Came with a key but now title though i got a bill of sale. No biggie TN doesnt require tags :D took the shroud off and the flywheel turns so the motor is free but the kickstart is stuck, both brake cables and throttle are stuck and the oil tank has cracked and busted from age without panels on it, and the seat cover is fubar and busted front right lens and left rear lense. The gas tank is as clean as a whistle inside. My mom took the sidecover off while i was working on the 94 and the entire CVT is rusted and corroded :( so she put it back on for me to clean and fix another day lol It is going to be some work but I think I can make her shine :D I sure have been busy and lucky the past couple days for sure

Correction, i was looking around on Motor Scooter guide and it showed a speedo from the se50 and the se50p so I went out to look and mine shows 45 MPH. I had just assumed it was the restricted version but in fact I have the SE50 WooT!

Gosh this thing is a hot mess. After all day getting the CVT cleaned up and the kickstarter unstuck, carb cleaned, gas tank drained, oil pump cleaned, and reed valve checked it still wont start. Checked compression after doing and checking everything else.....around 85psi plus i noticed water drops on the spark plug and a brown sludge in the oil pump hole and around the reeds. Apparently water had gotten in through the carb and the intake to manifold spacer had been installed upside down so I am assuming it allowed water to pass through into the crankcase. Hopefully the bearings arent shot but i imagine the rings are since they are iron/steel. Hopefully the cylinder and piston is fine. Will pull the motor and pop the top tomorrow to find out and flush out the crankcase as best I can. Hope I dont have to split the cases :(

I havent taken many pics but will get a few up sometime today. If you have seen a pic of these engines you have seen them all so I just get tired of taking pics of the same ole shyte lol Got the plastics scrubbed this morning and the engine off hte frame, took the intake, pump, starter, top end, and flywheel/stator off. The cylinder and piston dont look bad at all just a light bit of rust/build up on the cylinder wall and it looks like the bottom ring is out of spec but the piston itself looks good with only 700 miles on the odo. The crankcase had a small amount of brown sludge and a few tiny rust spots on the crank so I tipped it forward while spinning the flywheel to get most out then i soaked with gas and spun to get the rest out then I blowed with compressed air now I am soaking and spinning with the crankcase full of 2t oil. While that sits I am gonna light honed the cylinder wall and clean all that stuff up then check the spec on the rings. May have to order a set of rings and the head, cylinder, and intake gaskets since i have to get the rings and a air filter anyway. So far so good doesnt look terrible. Anyone know where to get CF reeds for this or do I have to get a sheet and cut my own?

Sanded the cylinder walls in a circular motion with 220 grit and filed the sharp port edges, the bottom ring didnt seem right so I swapped with with a ring from a spree not sure if it was top or bottom but it fit :D Lost a circlip so I had to find an sa50 one and cut some off but I managed to fit it in there but will need to get another when i order rings and gasket. I RTVed the base and intake gaskets just to see if all my efforts would pay off. Hooked everything back up but my throttle cable is still stuck somewhere in the middle but i can pull the coupler housing to give it some gas for now. If I dont have the strangest luck....enough kicks to fill the bowl and she started right up and idled good for a temporary pod filter and all the oil in there hahahha now I gotta figure out the throttle cable and clean the front end up, sand and paint the front shocks etc and get the plastics back on the front then wait for parts to start rolling in :D

Thanks now I gotta just finish cleaning it up and replacing a few parts :D I took the rear tail off and washed and heated gun that now it looks good :D Since it was coming a storm I decided to recover the seat. I barely had enough of the diamond stitch left but it turned out good, not perfect but wayyy better than what it was. Now I gotta clean up the shrouds and airbox then the battery box etc when i get an oil tank. I switched to another headlight cause the one i put on there yesterday didnt work. Must be my stator cause neither light works :( Will pull that off since that is basically the only thing I havent had pulled hahha Will post pics as soon as the storm clears and I get a better internet signal to upload :D

You should always check the frame. Swapping the speedometer is something I've done to most of my '87 elites. Others do this too.

I swapped the stator out today for a 94 elite trying to figure out why my headlight wasnt working, I thought you had to use the 94 flywheel but it didnt work, apparently you have to use the 87 flywheel for it to be in time BUT the stator wasnt the problem so i put the 87 back on and put the shrouds on after I cleaned them up. I took the headlight cover and front panel off and sanded and painted those and fooled with the multitester on all the wires up front in between coats. It was odd that on the headlight itself all combos of wires showed resistance but the wires on the hi low switch didnt have resistance between the white and yellow so i tested the switch on the spree and all the ones there had resistance so i took the 87 elite switch apart and sanded all the contacts, the headlight works now :D Paint dried and reinstalled panels and made me a kewl front decal :D all this inbetween working on a 2004 honda rebel 250 lol Got the airbox put back on too with a temporary airfilter i made outta some cushion foam, it is too thick but tis better to run rich than lean right?

Thanks Fox, I have yet to get a scooter that didnt need lots of work :D Plus it keeps me busy and I enjoy watching as it progresses from garbage to squeeky clean. No one I know can really appreciate what I do so I am glad there are people on this forum I can share this stuff with.

I guess if I cant find these rear panels soon I will just order some from yahoo japan auctions. If I do have to resort to that if anyone wants something we can combine the order just be aware the shipping and middle man fees will cost 3 times what the parts you want cost :P
