Spree to Stand-up Build

As requested, this will document my conversion to a Stand-up Spree aka Motorized Scooter here in California. This is done because the law allows a stand-up scooter to run in bicycle lanes as long as it is under 50cc without requiring registration or insurance.
So here goes:
To begin, 85 Honda Spree, $50 and found sitting in a garage untouched for 15 years

Got er running, had to clean just about every contact and the starter relay. New battery. Welded holes in exhaust so its nice and quiet now. Runs like a top.
Stripped cables off. First step to extend handlebar to suit standing position on the floorboard. Yes, I know, the welds arent pretty but they're strong.

Lookin good so far, and I love to see people beating the system. A spree is under 50 cc and when you are done it will be a stand up scooter, end of story rock the bike lanes baby

This is my 2nd conversion. The first was an 86 Spree with a kickstart so I didn't have to deal with putting the battery somewhere and ditches a bunch of wiring. This one will be a bit more difficult ad I have to keep the battery and all the switches to use the starter. Next weekend we'll see what to do.
Thanks to robotguy!

Haven't decided yet about selling, its not even built yet so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. It will have a headlight, not the stock headlight.

seems like getting a license/registration would make more sense then all the work you're doing to avoid it. I thought you could split lanes in california anyway. to each their own I guess...

I would do all that work to a spree to avoid all the license and registration and insurance for sure. All those fees add up. What if someone was too young for a license that spree would give so much freedom. My spree costs me $100 per year for insurance, $45 per year for permit/plate fees, not to mention the tax I had to pay when I did change of title/registration which was 15% of the $250 I paid for it and the title fee, so $37.50 tax plus $54 title fee is $91.50. Add on a motor vehicle inspection every two years that can range from $20 to $40 depending on the shop. Plus the cost and time required to get a motorcycle endorsement $60 minimum. Sounds worth the work to me, where I live anyway.

If I lived in the city I would just bolt a set of bicycle pedals to my spree and pretend it is one of those stupid ebike scooter things
