Winter Project - Suzuki RV90

Post by PolarIce »

Just picked this up from the local humane society donation site. Old guy had it picked up at his home, provided the key and the 1975 dated title for it. I'm crossing my fingers they will let me keep the 1972 plate for it. 1900 miles or so.

I didn't know where else to share my 2 stroke madness other than here. So... Now I have something to do this winter.

...way to score Master Chief... :thumbwink:
Have missed you comments, and look forward to following your progress here with the RV90.
Here in TN, the state allows vintage plate like yours to be registered on "Antique" class vehicles.

Good luck, this is another good place for 2 stroke fun, mostly RD350s but lots of the guys do smaller stuff too. Several of the posters over there have highly accomplished careers in the 2 stroke world.

Please please... Call me Senior Chief. LOL.

I would've made Master Chief had I stayed past 20 years but oh well. Life is good.

thanks Clem, I did "find" that forum yesterday and signed up. Not quite as welcoming as the Spree bunch but we'll see if they get any livelier over there after my post.

I can wait to break out the degreaser and hose this thing down.. looks like the oil tank cap is missing so someone thought aluminum foil would hold all the oil in... but it obviously leaked down the sides and mixed with the sand to make a horrible mess.

Will take some pics after cleaning. :2thumbs:

Well, you are an FNG and as I said there are some very accomplished individuals over there:) They are a bit more serious over there but there is a ton of knowledge and expertise, be nice and you'll get along fine. IIRC the small bike guys stick together a bit. The search works reasonably well.

Also IIRC, there's a nice MB5 build over there, I dont remember seeing much scooter work over there.

Man... this thing is crazy dirty. It's a mixture of 2 stroke oil and fine NM sand. Rinse and repeat several times over. I guess the old guy lost the oil cap? He put in aluminum foil to keep the oil in... yeah that worked like a champ.

I got a new oil cap and put it into place.

Here's the miles.

Up on the lift for tear down.

Image

Image

Did I mention how crusty this thing is.. I think I'll just cut this thing off. It would take me forever just to find the master link behind all this gunk and I'm sure this chain is not worth saving.

Image

Image

Image

Never worked on a carb inside the engine. Cool design, pain in the butt to work on. Super clean in here but I'm guessing there's a mess in the float bowl.

Image

Image

And... here it is.. Varnish city. Man it smells bad, it's still on my hands after 4 hours..

Image

Image

This air cleaner must've been home to some critters. Found what appear to be pinion nuts inside, a local favorite. Air filter is shot of course, just fell apart.

Image

Image

Image

Here's the carb in AFTER mode. I'm getting pretty good at this now.

Image

Stay tuned for more, I'm borrowing the neighbor's pressure washer and hit it hard. Don't worry I won't get it in the motor or intake or any of the vital areas.

Looks great! Coming along.

Not sure what year mine was, but I'm almost positive the front forks were hydraulic (those look like springs.) Headlight was round, not D shaped, and it was white with red and blue stripes (very patriotic.)

Greetings:

Back in my misspent CT-70-riding youth, one day a pair of RV90s buzzed by the local soda shop hangout. I tried in vain to follow them into the muddy woods, but alas, they were both too fast and too floaty over the slimy gumbo for me to keep up. The smell of their exhaust still haunts my dreams. Nice Vintage find, and worthwhile fixer-upper. Nice job on the carb. Chains are cheap. 1969 Sprockets might be a little tougher to find...

Good to see you back into the swing of things...
I found an example of RV90 that received a Lifan engine...hopefully you will revive the 90 smoker.

Wow.. That's a beauty.

I'm definitely reviving the 90cc 2 smoke with only 1900 miles I figure I can't go wrong.

Happy early Turkey Day everybody if I don't see you.

Did I mention how nasty dirty this thing is? I lugged most of it over to a DIY car wash and the caked on oil/sand just "laughed" at the pressure wand.

So... I'm stuck chipping away at it. So far a non-toxic oven cleaner has been my best friend, that and some $1 dollar store pot scrubbers.

Check this out after I cut the chain off and took the front sprocket cover off, I'm surprised the gear even moved with all this muck in here.

Image

Image

I got the rear rim off and separated the "halfs" only to find quite a bit of water and rust. Going to need to sandblast these I think.

I'll keep chipping away until I have something better to post. Wish me luck.
