Tattoli 72cc af16 builde

Post by tattoli »

Hello all i finally got all of my parts from the fine members of the hondaspree dot net community and decided to start on my first scooter build of all time, I hope everyone enjoys and maybe a few people who are planning a similar build could get a thing or two out of my thread.

I have (what I think is) all of the parts for a fairly decent 72cc mhr build, so far I have:

28mm oko
Ct chrome intake
Vforce reeds
Mhr aluminum 72cc
Mhr full counter crank
Polini variator
Polini belt
Polini 3 shoe clutch
9:1 gears
Arrow rep pipe
And all of the odds and ends needed for the build at this point

Tonight after getting my final order of parts in I started on disassembling everything that was easily taken off with hand tools. I plan on having my father lend me a hand whenever he can throughout the build. I am going to attach some photos of what I did tonight. I'm hoping tomorrow I can split the cases and maybe try my hand at some porting :)

Big thanks to Jeff, graphite, and red eft performance for all of the parts great people to shop from!

EDIT: this is my first build so if anyone has anything in particular that they think i should document that i may forget, let me know before its too late

I already picked up jets. I'm kind of skeptical of the 28mm carb with this build and if I don't like it I'll be buying one of the 24mm carbs you just got in plus some jets to go with it :)

If its 72cc 24mm is perfect for it. A Yamaha blaster 200cc 2 stroke uses 26mm just for inference. Do the trade while its still un built.

I'm going to keep the 28mm for now and if I feel it's lacking in throttle response or power I'll take it off and save it for another build since I already have the jets and all. Can't wait to get off of work and see what I can get done tonight. Hopefully I'll have an update for the thread.

That cylinder with that pipe is mind blowing. And where you are adding the crank as well... Make sure you hold on tight!!! My af18 with that pipe and cylinder and stock everything except for a red malossi center clutch spring is downright insane. Where you have all of the transmission stuff to support that bad boy... Prepare to scream like a little girl when you twist that throttle ;-)

28 mm carb with arrow pipe is a good setup.
Should have gone 8.4 or 8.1 gear.

well life got a little bit in the way, but im slowly working on the scooter still. i learned a lot and got a couple cool tools out of the experience though 8)

as of right now i ported the intake and the boost port to match the gasket, i also popped open the trans and got the final gear pressed onto the rear axle(drive shaft?) at the auto parts store since i dont have a press at my garage. i have the crank bearing in the freezer and im hoping to get the trans and case halves put back together tonight. tuning will probably happen over the weekend if i can actually get to working on this thing during the week.

ill be posting tons of photos at some point tonight and writing up more for any curious first timers since i feel like i learned a couple things that would have been nice to have known ahead of time like what special tools you need ahead of time and whatnot.

Do the crank first befor the trans that way you can put the cases in the oven (make sure they are clean with no oil )280f for about 7minutes then those frozen bearings will drop into place makeing it easyer .

well its all done now, it runs ok still need to dial in the trans tuning i think. pulls really hard from around 10 mph up to 55, the ruckus variator seems to be pulling the belt up on the drive face without additional spacers between the drive face and variator boss. here are some photos of the porting i did(first time using a die grinder haha) and some of the scooter after completion.

sorry for lack of updates and poor photos, everything was a lot more disorganised than i was hoping it would be... to say the least

for anyone that reads this in the future and wants it to go as smoothly as possible get a service manual, flywheel puller, steering wheel puller to split the cases, and a crank puller for installing the new crank :))))) that was the biggest hurdle for me having never split crank cases before

so i put a zx driven face(kn planning) on and got a 669 18 30 bando belt, really glad i did because now the cvt works properly, i get full travel along the ruckus variator and have good power from 0 to 55. really good choice much better than shimming out the drive face/finding the correct sized boss to work with the ruck variator. in the photo you can see the belt seems to be rubbing a bit, looks like its rubbing a little on the starting gear housing and/or by the rear cover bolt holes. i dont really know but im probably not going to grind anything down more than it already is. it ran at 55 mph today using both 6 and 6.5 gram rollers, i just put in 5.5 gram rollers and havent gotten around to testing further.

You have to fix that rubbing area and get a new belt. Grind it down asap or be prepared to continually replace belts. That would appear to be rubbing the starter housing.
