This morning I broke down and installed my cast Malossi 72cc kit. Wasn't gonna kit this bike but the malossi kit sounds pretty durable. The #85 jet that came with the kit is the wrong size for the carb so I went safe and installed a #88. Upon removing the stock cylinder I noticed the plug looked dangerously white running my de-restricted setup with #80 jet. Guess I should have looked at that. I'm gonna do heat cycles this week and probably wait until the weekend to take it for a spin.

I took the bike for its first spin today with the new kit on. Wow! The power increase is unbelievable. I didn't push it hard at all but cruising 40mph is very easy. On one short stretch I opened it up a bit and quickly buried the speedo. I also found a spot to mount the temp gauge.

So, like others, I'm having trouble keeping temps down with this Cast Malossi kit. Started with a #88 jet then went to a #92. It still closed in at 400 degrees at WOT. Tonight I threw in the biggest jet I have (#96). I can keep it WOT for about a mile and the temps slowly creep up. I let up at 399. After the engine is heat soaked it runs about 370's at 35-45 mph. Temps drop like a rock slower than that. I dropped the needle clip and that brought me down to 360's cruising and maxed 385.

Tomorrow I'm gonna search for air leaks. (didn't have any carb clean at home) I just think this jet is way too big. I didn't get any 4 stroking at all.

Any suggestions? Thank you!

Oh, I should order some spark plugs. Maybe the Bh7 is too hot?

Hi ben, I run br8hs on my 01 malossi build. I haven't been able to go over 370 yet on it. I'm at 5800 feet tho and it's kind of hard to run lean.
How's your float set?

I'll have to check the float. It should sit level when carb tilted upside down?

Well I can count out an air leak. The local stores didn't have the proper plugs so I ordered some BR8HS and BR9HS plugs online.

It should sit level with out depressing the fuel valve/needle valve. If it's below it will run your jets richer due to the fuel pressure, and leaner if it sits above. You have about a half mm of difference from center to create these situations
Float level is crucial to fine tuning your carb but is a pain to get perfect

I agree, 9/10 times it's an air leak. Especially if the temps rise fast over 320 at half throttle. I wait until I'm warmed up over 300 before I even attempt to do a run for jetting other wise there's too many factors

Thanks for the tips! I'm positive its not an air leak. I took all the shrouds off and sprayed every nook and cranny. Tomorrow I'll try the cooler plug and if time allows, check the float.

need to pressurize to look for air leaks. i missed a lot of air leaks using the carb cleaner spray method before i made a pressure tester.

carb cleaner only good to find big air leaks

I changed to a cooler plug bp9hs today and maxed my temps at 370!

Are there any tutorials on this forum on building a leakdown tester?

Got bored today so installed this slightly used PG Long I purchased off the forum. I can't believe the improvement over stock exhaust. When cruising at 40 and I pin the throttle, it buries the speedo within seconds!

After hearing all the reviews, it isn't as noisy as I expected.

Now just gotta paint it black... gotta keep that stock look!

A quick update... I now have 500 miles on the Malossi cast kit. Can't believe the improvement over stock. With stock carb and exhaust 60 mph is easy. Highest temp 400. I've been meaning to re seal everything but haven't gotten to it yet. Normal driving temps typically top lower than 350 but the jetting is way high. 3100 total miles on bike.
