'00 Elite SR Build

Post by Cmoped9 »

Starting my build on my 2000 Elite SR, purchased last summer with 600 miles on it, now has 1900 miles on it. Stock 50cc just wasn't enough power. Whenever the moped is being rode it's WOT 90% of the time I'm on it, on back roads. Purchased a Malossi Cast big bore last fall, hoping for some decent power with good reliability. Have a PG Long coming in the mail, and contemplating a 21mm Polini carb/intake set up from SSS. Hopefully it turns out well!

Removed cylinder head, looks to have a leak where the spark plug was? I was running a CHT gauge, and had the copper washer between the cylinder head and the spark plug. The copper washer isn't a perfect circle and has a gap, this could be where it's leaking? Possibly leading to my high temperature readings, plug was fairly rich looking though.

Yup, I did remove the original crush washer. Here is what I believe the problem is, CHT copper washer is not a perfectly circle hole, causing a leak.

Clean that head off really well and also check for fracturs in the head. My spree had a leak on the head from a fracturd head. Its probably rare, but worth a look.

Ya I'll check the head. Seems to be spitting out between spark plug and CHT copper washer. Needless to say that was a few hundred miles worth.
Malossi Cast in comparison to stock cylinder and piston.
Stock cylinder still in excellent shape, great cross hatch pattern, no scars.

Anybody kno a way to keep em from rusting like that?
I'd guess it was the cht washer, that don't look right to me. Maybe add another small copper washer inbetween? Might help.

I might have to look into adding a small copper washer of some sort.

Tried installing the Malossi Cast today, snapped one of the rings when trying to slide it on, must be really brittle, it seemed to perfect in it's spot, lined up with the pin. Have to order a set of rings from SSS.

You have to hold the rings on the sides with one hand, and wiggle the cylinder down gently with the other.
I have a brand new replacement piston w/rings kit if you want it now. I don't know how long it takes to order those but if sss can't get them for you I will sell you this one as I won't be needing it. It's Malossi # 34 7036.00 std. $60 shipped-piston, rings, pin, 2 clips. In pkg.
I also want to mention that I always lubricate the piston/rings with 2 stroke oil before installing and I make certain that the ring gaps align with the little pins in the grooves.

Ya SSS has the rings for like $33 so I'll just get them from him, thanks though. I had it all lubed up with 2 stroke oil, and pinched them down one at a time with my left hand, then slide the cylinder on with my right hand. I got the first ring in, started on the second and I think the first ring got the boost port hole or something and snapped. Oh well. Mistakes happen I guess.

Its amazing how something so brittle can be in a motor making 30hp+... but the secound you squeeze them wrong or they bend a tad bit up or down they snake like glass rods. Makes me wonder why they dont have 2 strokes that are ringless like 18cc rc cars and such. They can run without rings and ive never seized one of my rc cars. And ive ran them harder then ive ran the spree.

In college, no time for scooters unfortunately. Plus it's only 30 degrees here.

Had a question on installing the Polini 24mm carb and the Naraku intake, any tips or tricks guys have? I don't have the parts in my hand, but how do you hook the fuel lines up? I know the take has 2 hook ups, one being the fuel source and 1 being vacuum I believe? The carb needs the fuel line, does the Naraku have a spot to hook up the vacuum line?
