JDM Honda DIo ZX with Malossi Cast 72cc.

Post by NZHonda »

Some pics of my finally finished scooter. I ran into a few issues and it sat in the garage for a few years but the need for a running scooter for a big event, coast to coast (250kms over mountains) sparked my interest in the Dio again.

It started life as a JDM Dio ZX AF28 in japan. Then came to NZ. Kyle (paulpauly on fourm) took the front end and engine for his Nifty fifty. I bought the rest. I had enough parts, including a ZX af18e engine with the good crankshaft, carb etc. So it got put back together as a ZX dio.

Just out of interest we did measure this ZX and a standard dio and the ZX does have a slightly longer wheelbase.

Kyle put the bike together the first time. We just bolted on the Malossi cast 72cc bore. While I was riding it to break it in the original bearings well and truly shat themselves. After that it got the new bearings and seals. Kyle also did a mild port job. It has the standard carb and a GOSHI Honda pipe. I wanted it to look stock (for the law side of things) but be quick. The black plastics aren't in great condition with a few scratches but have polished up nice enough for a day runner scooter.

Speed wise. I've seen 80kmh but its most comfortable at 75kmh. Its got great acceleration and starts and runs like a standard Dio. I think that's beauty of having the cast kit for a daily runner bike. Kyle also managed to get his hands on an uprated oil pump from japan. With that installed there is no need to premix. Just fill her up and go.

So what has been done:

Engine:
Genuine Honda bearings and seals.
Up jetted factory carb
Malossi Variator and belt
I put new gears in but cant remember the ratio.
Malossi Cast Iron bore 72cc

Exterior
Standard dio ZX with the rear 'wing/spoiler"
I bought the alloy wheels. Media blasted them and had them painted
3.00x10" ContiTwist tyres at 35psi (probably going to drop to 32psi)
NCY throttle and grips (so nice to use, very comfortable and easy action)
120kmh speedo
TTO temp gauge and rev counter
I changed all dress up fairings to grey. I didn't like the old purple and mish mash stuff it came with. I like the tougher look of black grey with red wheels.

Anyway, I will let the pictures do the talking.

That is one nice setup you have there NZ ;)

You are running the stock airbox and PB carb? What size main and pilot are you running?

NICE!

Can you tell us a little more about the NCY throttle?
--Shortens up the throttle travel?
--Does it mounts right onto the SuperDio handlebars without having to cut into the headlight or speedometer plastics?

Thanks!

Hi Melo, I'm in New Zealand. We have very different laws to the USA. It is relatively easy to register our vehicles here. However, there are rules about mopeds and scooters so hence the need to keep it looking stock.

The NCY throttle is super nice and an easy install. It shortens the twist movement but more importantly the grips are bigger and the needle bearings make it really smooth. Overall it makes for a much more comfortable ride. You also get amatching grip for the other side. These are physically a bigger diameter than the standard throttle and grips.

Install is easy. Remove the headset plastics. remove old throttle and grip. Use the standard Dio throttle cable. Install the new NCY throttle. No need to cut the plastics or anything. It takes a bit of mucking around and trial and error to get the grip in the right place but it slides in and has plenty of room around it. The plastics butt up against the throttle and hide the screws. All in all a very clean install. I bought it from Scooter Swap Shop. As always he was very helpful and great to deal with even on the other side of the world! Make sure you support him and buy it off him when the time comes.

I also replaced the front forks with the gold coloured forks that came with my dio alloy wheels. It looks way better. I'm not sure if they are better forks? They seem beefier than the standard disk forks? Anyway, they complete the picture.

I forgot to add.

I have also used an oversized Tadia starter motor and an offset malossi shcok absorber. Both these mods are highly recommended.

The shock alone makes a huge improvement to the ridability of the bike.
Both shock and starter bought from scooter swap.

Something else I did while sorting out plastics was to use some over sized self tapping screws from the hardware store. They look great and work well to keep the panels installed and tight.

That's all on this beast for now.

I would like to get a few more dress up items as money allows. Those nice axel pullers and disk brake cylinder cover are on the list to get. Also I need to find some good looking mirrors that extend out past my considerable shoulders/frame so I can see what's behind me. For now though our summer is coming and I'm ready to ride with a safe, reliable, fastish scooter!

and an update on this scooter. It has done many many cross country long haul miles on the cast iron malossi 72cc. I've changed the wheels to some nice shiny red dio alloys. A PG street sport pipe. And Paulpauly7 has retuned it several times. It's not to loud and cruises nicely. It can pull up a decent hill no problems.

I added the purple ZX stickers. They are cheap nasty Chinese stickers that are peeling off now. I'll probably start over with the fairings eventually.
