Teach an old dog new tricks. AF18E Stage6 R/T95 Build.

Post by pitobread » Wed Dec 27, 2017 3:30 am

I broke my knee riding trials and got bored.

Thats about all i'm going to explain as to why.

This isn't slow, it's already 82ccImage

But I want more.

Que this picture I found on the net.

So I'm not the first, but probably the first around here. Those are 2 different builds, one using the minarelli base, and one using the piaggio, but who knows if they ever ran.

But I'm a machinist, so I don't let that discourage me.

So I dragged my old early AF18E small crank out of the shed and ordered the last R/T95 kit from ScooterTuning

So I tapped and bolted it on for a test fit.

It looks like the inlet will work with some massaging. However it will be a restriction even with a big CT. Im working on that.

I can share how I am going to build a crank from scratch to make this work next I guess.

Looks awesome. Why did u want to go with the small spline crank?

I didn't, I just had the cases.

I am putting a large crank in there. JiangWayne sells the seals to convert it.

I'm curious to see how those seals hold up. I have a spare small spline af18e that idk what to do with.

Well I guess its more complicated than just seals.

I will need to machine the bearing pockets deeper to use a late model crankshaft. It is not as easy as just seals. KN also makes 11mm wide bearings for this reason but I wanna use C4 bearings and they just look like taiwan bearings.

All in all its probably easier to just to buy another set of later model cases.

And in case anyone is wondering, a early small crank web to web thickness is 34mm +/- .1

A late large crank is 36mm

Wow that much work. Thanks for the heads up. I was gonna just use an af16e case on the trans side, if I build that motor. But In have a big spline af18e to play with.

Well their are either the KN 11mm bearings and jiangwayne seals or bore 1mm each side.

I am going to attempt boring but also have another set of cases on the way as well.

Hi pito. If you machine the bearing Pockets deeper, the bearings make cover the oil fill hole? Or not enough oil flow too bearing?

That may be a possibility, but those holes could be hogged out as well.

Ive got a large cases on the way here so if it doesn't work, Meh.

Well sometimes its a win, sometimes its a loss.

So My CMR's wont work without some divine intervention of the machining kind. It seems that they use a 16mm crank pin VS the 18 of a normal stock crank. So my Pro-X rods wont work, luckily it seems like Taida will work. But I don't have that crank yet and the CMR look quite nice machining wise.

Im probably still going to bore it out and make it work, but man. What a nuisance. I think most of the cranks that use the 2AB polished style rods use the smaller pin, which means smaller bearing etc etc. Gross.

Subsequently I could also use a Pro-X 03.1005 which is the 22mm big end VS the 24mm stock Dio with all other dimensions the same. I may order one but the smaller bearing doesn't give me hope it will last as long. Thoughts?
