Looking for an engine.

Post by Kingkill »

Hello,

I'm looking for a replacement engine for my 1987 Honda Elite SE 50. I believe that scooter ran on an Af05 engine, though I'm unaware of what other year and Honda model engines that scooter would be compatible with for an engine swap(Other Elite models, Aero, Spree?). I'd appreciate any input on what engine I could use here, whether it would restore my scooter to its standard performance or be an upgrade in engine power. I've searched a lot on eBay, haven't found a perfect fit yet, though I am willing to do slight modifications to my scooter to make a similar, yet not identical engine work. Any amount of insight would help here. I've owned this scooter for 13 years and would hate to have to sell her off for parts. Thanks.

Why wouldn't you rebuild the engine that's on it now?

It would need a rebuilt engine crank. I was advised that replacing the entire engine would be cheaper and involve a lot less labor.

I disagree with the advice you were given. 20 years ago, it might have been easier to find an engine with a usable bottom end. Not now.
Advise you split the case and install new bearings.

I actually have the Tusk tool for splitting the cases sitting on my bench that I'd sell you, if you're doing the work yourself.

Greetings:

Same engine as on the 86 and 87 Aero, and the Elites from '88 to '93. '85 Aero had no kickstarter pedal.

Yes. I'm interested in that Tusk tool. I don't know anything about rebuilding an engine, but I'm willing to give it a try. Once I get started, I'll post in the technical help section of the forum. What would be the best way to acquire replacement bearings?

I'll send you a PM about the tool.
I moved the topic, you can just continue to use this one.

The bearings (and seals for that matter) are generic parts; you can buy them from Honda but if you look up a parts diagram it will show you the machine part numbers for those.
Per below link (1997 SE50) uses bearing 6203 and 6204. Those bearing numbers correspond to an industry size and configuration. There are machine / bearing shops that carry them, or you can order online.

Oil seal is: OIL SEAL (15.6X23.5X7) and you need two of them.

Repairing a bottom end is one of the more invovled jobs on these engines, but doable. It works much easier if you freeze the bearings prior to case install iirc, but read up before you get started. I've done the job exactly one time and that was over a decade ago.
