Looking for baskets

Post by Tcolegro » Tue Jun 19, 2018 8:50 am

Hi everyone! I have a pair of sprees and am looking for some baskets!

I had an express with a great basket on it but no longer own it.

Please let me know what you are getting rid of!

Thanks

If you aren't an OEM-only guy, cheap baskets can be adapted with little effort.
Finding and paying for OEM seems overkill if you're not entering bike shows.
Member vintagegarage has plenty to offer on the basket subject.
Expect him to chime in with opinions...mm... :urban:

I bought one on eBay that is perfect fit for a Spree. It came with the mounting bracket for the rear rack. Just doesn't have a HONDA logo on it.

Holds beer. Nuff said.

mm is right.. I think Honda made both front and rear accessory baskets, and I have one of each. The front basket is most handy in my book as you can put cheeseburgers in it while in the drive-through line at McDonalds without getting off of the scooter, and likewise, you can more easily pass out dog biscuits to the local dogs as you ride around. Once I found out how scarce the Honda front Spree baskets were, I made a few homemade copies for my other Sprees, using essentially imitation Honda Passport baskets that were sold on eBay and sort of copying the Honda spree font chrome rack that you need to mount the factory accessory basket. Those Passport imitation baskets look similar to the real thing but are a bit pricey. See this thread called "One-Day Spree Homemade Front Basket Project" to see what I was doing a few years ago:

It looks like the imitation Passport baskets are still available for about $36 each including shipping at:

Last year, I got tired of paying high prices for imitation Honda baskets on eBay, so I started using $4 baskets from Dollar General. They come in three sizes, and the middle size is about right for the front of a Spree. I paint them white for 1984-1986 Sprees and black for 1987 Sprees. This is what the Dollar General baskets look like after you remove their handles and paint them up. They don't have the "Loops" at the top of the front edge, but they work fine, unless you are looking for a show quality Spree:

They also work fine on the rear of a Spree, and instead of going to all the work of building metal tie downs, I just started using zip ties to match the basket color..
