Greetings:

We think of the variator set point as dependent on two factors:
1: Vario gram load, and
2: Contra spring.

We sometimes forget that the rear pulleys include a cam-action mechanism that's designed to lower RPM once you're done accelerating. If the power is "ON", the belt friction - pulling forward on the outer sheave - tends to keep the rear sheaves from spreading apart. Once the power tapers off, the spring/weight ratio can take over belt position once again. If the RPMs rise high, but drop fairly quickly as top speed is approached (Or the throttle is decreased, or bad jetting or...) you can hear it.

I've begun to realize that it may indicate your overall gearing is simply too tall. Still wrapping my head around that one, but it would explain the RPM drop. A possible remedy is dropping variator load, or one of those Torque Driver outer sheaves if they make one with the right specs for S and/or ZX transmission.

Greetings:

S or ZX diameter?

There are 2 choices of ramp incline you decide when you assemble.

Picture below
felt a weird vibration about 15 miles from home
got home and found??

with only about 500 miles on the pipe and it broke
the bracket that holds the muffler part on
broke off right at the bend on the pipe
vibration found

burned through about 8 gallons of gas so far trying to tune this

a lot of jetting even changing contra spring
to blue red and back to yellow and changing jets
variator weights ect

things I found out in case you didn't know
(and because my memory is not that great)

by just changing only the contra spring from yellow to blue
the cruising rpms drop at the same mph
and yellow to red the cruising rpms rise at the same mph
so the contra spring is to keep you at the ideal rpm (in the power band)
for passing / at speed accelerating

for what I want performance and speed and millage the yellow works best
the red gives better acceleration at speed at the cost of gas milage
because higher rpms at cruising speeds

also by lighting ONLY the variator weights increases the rpm and the bike runs hotter
by lighting only the weights it lowers rpm and runs cooler

another interesting thing I found out
my max rpm is not always what max rpm is at top speed
max rpm hit was 11,040 but looking down at the tac when the bike topped out
the tac was reading about only 9,500 9,800 no matter what I changed

the pipe likes max about 10,800 rpm to keep that rpm at top speed
anything over that the rpm drops down to a lower rpm at top speed no matter what I changed

93 Octane fuel , (R+M)/2.
8.5 gears
24mm Polini carb 118 main jet 40 pilot jet
CARB needle second clip from the top
yellow contra spring 1500 RPM
polini variator 37.5 grams

CHT max hit 388 deg
68.2

2.959 miles on bike now
1,480 miles on rebuilt motor

phongeer drive face

do you gain any max rpms =no
does it rev a little faster = yes

problem
the kick starter face is .050 less than the stock face
that combined with the malossi crank which is longer ( for the zx trans which I am not using)
the kick starter dosent work

solution
the polini variator comes with a longer app 1/8 in variator drive boss
if you put it in the belt slips at take off but if you shorten it
I found .080 longer than stock was to long and at .060 my belt didn't slip
and the belt was down further and took off better

so does anyone know where I can buy a variator shim kit
so I can add and remove shims
more to come
Paul

Greetings:

Bigger hardware stores and your favorite Bolt and Screw store in The Bad Part of Town carry 14mm washers for every occasion. I've even used discarded spark plug washers. they crush down to about 1mm thick. I now have a collection of these, as Home Depot's might be thicker than Lowe's for example. Just make sure they're no thicker at the Outer Diameter than the drive boss, or mount them behind.

put the pg short on again about 3 weeks ago
constructon zones are not your friend
leaned into a turn in a construction zone hit a bump and push the muffler part into the chamber
cracked the strap that holds the muffler and cracked the pipe
at the muffler mount next to black line
back to the welder

trans belt was replaced at 2100 miles
1767 miles on trans belt to date

3867 miles on bike as of today
tires were replaced at 1450 miles
there are 2417 miles on the Metzeler ME1tires
front tire you can see the part line in it
back tire is starting to wear out ( i don't do burnouts )
figure about 500 miles left on it
