Cdn Dio - Polini Contessa BBK build

Post by DeanP »

So I have my parts on order/in the mail to build my 2000 Dio (Cdn ver) bbk with stock carb/muffler/intake. I also ordered MJ of 88,90 & 92 and since my carb has a slow jet, I ordered the next size up from what I have; a 38. I have 9.8:1 gears on the way also.
I'll definitely be asking some questions as I go along; more about what to use for parts!

So since winter will be here in about a week, I'm going to postpone the building until spring, but I'll probably end up buying a carb set-up and exhaust by then.(April!)
I ordered a tach & a heat sensor, so I know what the motor will be doing and keep it just right.

First question: If I was going to choose an exhaust system based on mid-range torque/power, which one would be good for this? I've listened, via You Tube, the Wild Lion and the Arrow and feel that the Wild Lion is about as loud as I should go! lol Any others sytems out there that would work for me?
I'm also will upgrade the carb too, so any input on that will be helpful also!
Here are some photos of my "Hogg"!

graphite9 wrote:also, you want to do the build in the winter. That way your 100% ready to tune in spring, and dialed in summer. Everyone waits to do the build till spring, then you spend too much time in the summer tuning. When summer rolls around you want to be 100% dialed and spend your time riding, not tuning.
Problem is the cold and snow. Couldn't really run it anywhere. I could start it, but no where to ride due to snow! lol
I did think of just building it, but was concerned about the assembly oil draining down over the mths until its time to start it. Thoughts?

Thanks for all of the compliments!

As for the exhaust, what about those Techigas Next-R or RS-11?

Some guys are stilling riding their bikes, but its gonna be in the high 30s(F) next week and it will probably drop a lot after Halloween! Almost time to dig out the sled...

Probably will build and heat cycle it as much as possible before it gets really cold!

They usually say " 8 mths of good sledding followed by 4 mths of poor sledding!"

It was like Christmas today! I got my stuff from G9 and my other stuff from a cycle shop in Ontario!
My little city didn't have any good 2T oil, so I bought it on-line, plus I got a tach while I was at it.

Installed the tach & Temp gauge. Kind of a pain cause I had to remove all of the plastics. It's gonna be quicker to rebuild the motor! lol

I did a dry fit of the vari and I think I have a problem. Seems that the Polini shaft is too long cause my outer sheave is barely on the shaft and my starter bendix barely reaches. Is this normal or do I use my stock shaft?? (though it would need a little sanding as it doesn't fit into the Polini inner sheave easily) See photos...

One more question;maybe. I installed the oil delete plug, but I couldn't really figure out how to, so I made up a shim so to speak. Is there a better way??

graphite9 wrote:Use the stock sheave on the variator. And the shim for your oil plug looks great! Your on the right path.
Graphite9: I'm thinking you meant stock shaft?? I'll have to sand the stock shaft to fit the Polini inner sheave.

And for the gear change on the output shaft: I guess I press off the old one and press on the new one?

One more question: What should the ring end gap be?

graphite9 wrote:Sorry, yes I meant stock shaft. Don't worry Bout the gap during break in. That plug will be ruined when your don't breaking in. And yes, press the gear off and new one on
I guess I should of said," piston ring end gap". I've always pushed the ring down the cylinder and measured the gap and if needed, sanded until I get the correct gap. I don't know what stock is supposed to be. What will this gap be?

Since the Polini kit didn't come with a piston pin bearing, I had to order one today. Sad thing is it will take a week.

Anyone have any info on what the piston ring end gap should be? I usually have to file a little off to meet the specs...
