Yeah since the stock jug had a cut as well it had to have been like that from honda. Just a quick fix instead of dumping a case.

I don't think its the block? if this cylinder is offset , it won't sit right and may hit the ramps. :imo:

Greetings:

From the way it came apart, it seemed like a virgin engine to me. Dry paper gaskets mostly stuck to the cylinder .. the crankcase deck had the typical Honda machine marks ans a deat-flat center seam. Compression was measured with reeds on, no carb attached and just thinking of this now... no pipe.

I did hit another minor snag prior to dropping it under the frame for Ignition:

maybe the Offset theory is right, but the stock reed block was a tiny hair off. I didn't wish to risk the mating surfaces, so a file was used to remove a casting ridge from the side of the manifold:
F9Mani_resized.jpg

...and it tucked in perfect.

Started, bystarter idled, took throttle perfectly on the first try. Seems to run like a stock, linear and brisk off the line. Perparing for our first errand ride today. Sometimes you just get lucky.

Hi wheelman. the contesta kit is very good. I've owned a few myself. I'm glad you got it sorted out.
just to check, I took a photo of some stock cylinder heads for comparison. :nerd:

Greetings:

Flash 7, now Flash 9 came due for annual inspection - Texas checks tires, brakes, signals, lights and horn. It was time for a short Buzz into town. I can't believe my luck with this thing. The 90 jet was the right call. It's torquey down low and RPMs drop nicely when maintaining speed. Very linear throttle all the way from idle through midrange, with no burbles or 4-stroking at all. It's too soon to wring its throttle, so I kept it around 1/2 or 2/3, but still 40 comes up quickly.

I don't believe the max RPM happened at that cruising speed, but during a squirt from a stoplight. I'll have to start paying closer attention. Temps stayed between 310 and 340 mostly. That 369 was a throttle-off heat spike, so I may have to be careful decelerating; keep a little throttle on to supplement that skinny PA Pilot circuit. Still, with a Polini Iron, I'm not too worried until it approaches 400. Apparently it won't even do that with the throttle off.

Hi wheelman.
nice work. If your heat spikes to 400 , you could up jet to 92, you can drop your C clip one down from the middle, a air scoop helped with my stock carb, you can cut out the grill on the shroud.
you should see 50 + mph after breakin. :thumbwink:
anal scooter inspection? I've never heard of that. must be a Texas thing? lol

nice work after all that trouble with the bbk. keep us posted when you hit top speed. :D

Greetings:

Thanks for your concern and kind wishes. The Lakes area around Austin took a 6-12 INCH rainfall hit. Riverside homes were swept away by a 30-40-foot wall of water. One family actually made a smartphone distress call from one such home afloat in the middle of the river; at least 12 people known drowned/missing.

Fortunately here on the coast, we're only seeing high bay levels. The rain seems to have let up for now, at least until Hurricane Season... Texas: Not a state for fraidy-cats.

Greetings:

Flash 9 has about 50 miles since assembly. The 90 jet has performed flawlessly from idle on up. The spark plug confirms the moderate temperatures I've been seeing as well as good, burble-free power:

on assembly was accepted due to reserve supply of Avgas+Premium Premix. Now that the jug is nearly dry, I decided to tone things down a bit. The Polini's base gasket is a sliver of metal:

The MHR base gasket generously provided by the distinguished Forumista who sold me the kit is considerably thicker:

Yeah the pic sucks bit it's 0.50mm. I greased it well, reassembled and re-tested compression. You wouldn't think a third of a millimeter down at the cylinder base would make much difference, but
F9CR145PaperMalossiBase_resized.jpg
F9CR145PaperMalossiBase_resized.jpg (167.48 KiB) Viewed 7910 times
it's down nearly 20 points. From risky to spirited. Performance seems unchanged. Temps should be lower, but I haven't gone out for a long ride yet. At least my trips to the county airport under cover of darkness are over...
