Remind me what kind of speed and RPM you're seeing with the Corsa on a stock carb and pipe? I think I can bust 55 with the Contesta, but there really isn't all that much power in mine beyond 8000.

Moist A/F Scree

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

Lately I have noticed a bit of fuel moisture on F9's air screw. Not exactly Leaking, but wet. I confess ignorance as to why this would start happening out of the blue, and have limited stock PA carb experience. Can't remember if there is a tiny o-ring gone bad in there?

Greetings:

Several months ago I ourchased and installed the kit from Honda that replaces the little o-ring ans washer in the air jet. This resolved the wet screw and restored consistent idle speed.

Then for the last 10 days, when starting F9 as I do every couple of days, the idle speed was suddenly higher. Much cooler weather may be a factor but it would also "hang" for awhile when blipoing the throttle. Uh-oh, air leak I thinks. So today I pulled the bucket and covers and nooe, dry as a bone after about 600 miles of Ms. Wheelperson's gentle errand runs. Only one carb mount bolt was a wee bit short of Snug, and a bit of seep around the manifold gaskets. A quick kiss with an 8mm socket and all is well again. Could a drop from the 80s to the 40s, and one night with 29 for a low account for it? Now I think so.

Happy holidays.
not sure why the high idle, possibly a small air leak? at the screw? cold weather?
sorry Mr. Wheelman not too helpful.

's'all good, Ped. Pretty sure tightening the slightly loose carb mount has fixed the issue. It's running great - max temp 318 with Ms. Wheel-Person at the helm for a 40 minute ride on Christmas Eve. Ambient temps in Deepinnaharta were high 70s.

Woke to 25F. in Deepinnaharta this moning. Yup, it freezes here every couple years. Good news is the amazing performance Flash9 exhibited with the dense dry air! It got to 55 UPwind with throttle to spare. Thinking of going 88-89 main for Normal weather, because 90 has to be a hair rich.

Greetings:

Cool and Dry isn't the weather that comes to mind very often here in Deepinnaharta. But a dry front blew in from the Great White North last night, and brilliant blue skies greeted me on my Honey-do Errand Run this morning. Temperature was mid-50s. I didn't bother to max out tire pressures or don my form-fitting Danskin, but on my return from a (perhaps slightly wind-assisted...) two-mile run down the highway my Vapor had recorded this:

The CHT was running 368 while I was underway. The 3-eighty-something was during a coast-down after I got off the highway and riding East, the air intake downwind from the Norther. RPMs hovered near but not much over 9K either. Not bad for stock airbox, carb and exhaust. Jetted to 90.

Read all about it in Non-Honda Tech Help. I would appreciate any leads to a Vespa enthusiast website, and even more if anyone has modded 4-strokes personally.

Vexing Trivialities

Post by Wheelman-111 »

Greetings:

My then-new 2001 Elite received a classic VDO analog temperature gauge (from a vintage BMW) soon after I got it. I installed it into the glovebox surround by drilling 2" hole with my trusty holesaw. When the Vapor was installed, the gauge and the ill-fated Chinese analog tach - the one I never got working properly - that replaced it left me with an annoyance I could abide no longer. Perusing fEeBaY, found this.

M'eh, for ten bucks, whadda I got to lose? Turns out, it doesn't suck.

Fits the hole just perfectly, no bracketry needed. Friction fit. Green goes to ground, Red wire to the Black/Yellow low voltage coil wire, black to the other coil wire. I even cobbled a non-destructive connector from spare female and male spade connectors in my Electrical Junk kit, so I can reconnect the coil with stock connectors if/when this catches fire.

Easy to read large LED numbers, even with decrepit rheumy Wheel-eyes filled with tears of joy at night. Best of all, it dispatches a really junky analog tach to the dustbin while filling the unsightly hole with something useful. Numbers seen to be real close - like within 40 rpm - of the Trail Tech values, because this one refreshes every 1.5 seconds or so. I like it.

Greetings:

Every once in a while, you find yourself unable to leave well enough alone. I saw a Kymco exhaust for sale by a noble Forumista, and it looked intriguing. Compared to the constant-diameter stock SR head pipe, the Kymco had 3 graduated pipes in the header section. The muffler chamber was also considerably larger. Why not see what effect it has on Flash9?

So I hit up said List Member and for a nice price, he agreed to ship it to me. I knew it was a bit rough cosmetically, and pretty dirty but a pocketful of quarters at the carwash fixed that. I blew the high pressure water into the pipe from both ends, and there was considerable carbon, in the form of small chunks. I thought of baking it, but bonfires in genteel Deepinnaharta are frowned upon.

As for the outside, I also knew trusty Angle Grinder and Flap Sanding Wheel would be up to the task. A couple of pleasant hours (OK it was Blistering Hot in Deepinnaharta...) in the garage and the prep was going well. The Dremel with the stainless brushes got a workout too, for all the nooks and crannies:

Deep scratches in the body of the pipe were smoothed out but the existing paint was adhering pretty well, so I didn't bother with a Bare Metal stripping. I did sand a little more from there.

That VHT primer and paint advertises a 2000-degree heat resistance. We'll see. I thought the red accent would look cool, but there's only one "Red" available in the product. Close enough?

Once mounted, the pipe has a sharper "ring" to it than the SR pipe, but overall noise level was comparable. I still have to test for top speed, but low-end felt very good. There's a slight fall-off point in the midrange, that might need some variator tuning to compensate. I don't believe the carb jetting will need to be changed, based on temperatures comparable to those seen with the SR pipe.
