Summer Build: '96 SA50

Post by Dbroogs »

Going to be building up my elite this summer. Derestricted it last summer: washer from exhaust, up jet to 85, punched out tab in airbox, new variator from Taz.

This Summer I'm doing even more ( and spending more too  )
Just bought G9's $125 malossi 72cc kit and 9:1 gears to go with it. Trying to keep everything else stock but might have to get a new clutch if things start going bad down the stretch, the scoot has over 4k miles on it.

Thinking about picking up a set of Met wheels I found for $100 but don't know if the budget can handle it.

This is my first build so I am looking for a little help from you guys. What equipment should I get for putting this bad boy together? What else should I do to it?
Any tips to get me on my way is greatly appreciated. And i promise to post progress pics and updates along the way.

Met rims are a great option in the beginning it's worth the money. Tubeless tires are great. Sounds like your on your way already just start part by part. A good carb will be warranted down the road.

West Bend for the summer then back to UW Madison for school.

Just picked up a met rear wheel and will be posting pictures of the broken down ped tonight. Tore her down to the frame just for sh*ts and gigs. Will probably assemble front end tonight as well. New gears came and are installed along with new gasket. Wheel and new malossi kit should be here by the end of the week along with trail tech tto for temps.
I CAN'T WAIT!!
More to come... :coolcruise:

I may or may not clean it. I am just too excited to get it up and running. I got a set of jets for the stock carb from treatland and will start it out at 90. Picked up plugs to do plug chop if it starts to get finicky while tuning. Will post updates when rim, jets, and CHT gauge come in and i can start riding/running the engine.

So are those actually the correct jets that they are selling? That would be rad!

Jets and CHT gauge coming in today. Everything is together and I will do some warming up and heat cycles today after I start with the 90 main. Going with stock pump not tied open and putting in the 2.7oz bottles of oil every gallon to get me close to 32:1. Stock pump puts out 135:1 according to a thread on here which is around 1 oz per gallon.

Do you guys think I should port the intake or leave it be for now?

Port even with stock carb and airbox?

Got everything together and the jets fit! What a good find. I was having a very hard time with the kickstart. It kept grinding while the engine was running as well as trouble with the electric start. All problems from tightening the cover bolts too hard, I guess you can over do it.

Also had a scare after I started it up the first time
After about 30 sec of idle and blipping the throttle I heard a rattling. I immediately thought the worst and was about to check the piston and cylinder but lo and behold it was the exhaust heat shield rattling loose.
Which brings me to hopefully my last two q&a bits of this build. Do you guys keep the shield on the exhaust? And should I keep the shroud off the block during heat cycles/break-in?

Thanks guys, this is such a fun little project.

Leave your shrouds off and have a box fan standing by. After you shut it off put the fan on it till it cools back down.
