Converting bystarter to manual choke

Post by japennell »

Hello. I am investigating converting my 01 Kymco Cobra carb to a manual choke and removing the bystarter all together.

Has anyone successfully performed a similar conversion on either a Kymco or Honda? I am interested in getting a better understanding of the impact of such a move so I can determine if this is doable for me.

It is my understanding that:

1. when the engine is cold and therefore the autobystarter spring/needle is retracted it lets more gas into a little chamber which richens the mixture.

2. when the engine warms up and the autobystarter spring/needle extends it seals up the hole where the extra gas was coming from, thus leaning out the mixture.

So the autobystarter serves the same purpose as a choke, but it does so not by letting in air, but by letting in extra gas.

Thanks

It's a triple function device, It's admirable what Honda got out of this design.
  • Bitty bystarter fuel well cast into the carb provides a prime
  • The bystarter valve needle when retracted flows extra fuel
  • Bystarter brass collar is a slide valve which controls an air passage *around* the throttle slide
-- Back to the manual modification --
Manual modification should have both the needle and air valve collar.

Couple years back noiseguy found the dellortocarb has a flip lever where the bystarter normally goes. That part as a replacement may fit your Kymco, and was priced at about $12. Full Thread

Once again Bear has been out scooter picking and just got home. Yes, it will fit all the 50 cc scooters with either a PA or PB carb.

Has anyone actually installed this and found it to be a viable alternative to a bystarter?

It is just a manually controlled valve instead of and electrically controlled one. The OKO carbs all use a manual bystarter.

I have one on order, since my by-starter died, and this is the cheaper, and easier alternative, especially since my Spree doesn't have the side panels. I'll update when I get it installed.
