Engine swap into an '86 spree

Post by gman75 »

Hi all,

This is my first post and I was wondering if anyone has tried to swap a spree motor from a different year into a 1986 spree. The current motor in there is missing the belt drive cover that says "Honda on it". I was also told it is in questionable condition.

I am not sure what the year of the spare motor is, but it has serial # 2622994. It has a kickstart.

I tried putting the cover from the spare motor onto the stock motor, but they don't fit up.

So then I tried removing the stock motor entirely and putting in the spare one, but it interferes with the frame. The casting area around the starter motor is larger than on the stock motor so it hangs up. Help!! What do I do? :(

If you can find the engine numbers, that would help. Spree are GK8's. Look on top by the carb. Or take pics and post them.

Ok, thanks for the advice guys.

Well, I checked the stock motor that came with my spree and sure enough, "GK8" was stamped near the oil reed valve.

I checked the spare motor and it says "GS6". I also noticed the carb, while similiar, has slightly different fluid port locations.

So what kind of motor do I have?

I think the motor is from a 1989 Elite!

OK, using the engine code and engine serial number, it looks like the engine is from a 1989 SB50P Elite E according to www.jackscootershop.com/honda_VIN.html

Does anyone have a manual for this??

D/l the '87 Aero manual. It's as close as we have right now.

The Elite engine you have is preferable to the Spree plant, so getting it in there is worth the effort. More mods available, and faster overall.

Vette76 was fitting an Elite engine into a Spree, I believe, and had pics. You will need to do some work around the motor mounts.

Really? I dont see much difference on the elite engine from the outside... the carb is a little different, (and it is damaged so I will using the spree carb on it - hope it works)

Does the elite engine have a variable pulley like the aero?.. I dont see it...

the sb elite engine is basically the same as the spree. the cases are a little different and the carb is also a little different. this engine should bolt in because mine did. there are no mods for the elite sb. it is also basically the same trans as the spree.
