Can I use a spree piston + cylinder in an elite engine?

Post by gman75 »

I have an '89 elite E engine.. needs a new cylinder and piston. Can I use a cylinder and piston from an '86 spree? Spree parts seem to be much more common.

According to the honda dealer, they are different PNs from one model to the next, but is there really much difference?

Things to check to be the same would be:
1) Exhaust hookup (likely same)
2) base gaskets
3) Jug height from base gasket to top of head

Bolt circle will be the same. #3 is critical, there's a 5mm difference between SA50/Aero jugs and Spree jugs, so you need to be precise when measuring. If it's off, when assembled the piston will be 5mm short of reaching the top of the jug (instead of dead level.) You won't make much power, might not even start.

Ok, the full designation of the model is a 1989 SB50P "Elite E". Is that what you mean by "SB"?

Don't you still own one of each engine?

Well I have an '86 spree scooter and the original engine with no side cover and bad cylinder and piston. I also have an '89 SB50P engine with a bad cylinder and piston. I did a quick fit check and it looks like a spree cylinder will go in this newer engine but I didnt check the piston, jug height yet like you said.
