Expander rings

Post by niftyfifty »

just went down to local honda dealer and ordered new rings, boys in workshop said " do u have expander rings for it", i said yeah for the bottom ring, he said dont put it back on when you replace the rings, they cause more problems than they are worth. i said whys that, he said excessive rings wear and they can score the * out of you bore.

so now i'm thinking do i put them back on or leave it>??? whats your response,

the black spring like piece between the bottom ring, and the piston. i would put it in, since it expands the ring. its there for a reason.

in this picture is the very innermost ring the expander ring? I've seen one of those w/ every ring set I worked with but never used it.

this issue is least on my mind now!

as i was putting the rings on the piston, and putting the piston on to the crank, i slid the guiden pin into its hole, i had a clothe securing the crankhousing so the little pins would fall down into the crank housing, i did one side fine, wen to do the other, the pin popped out of my pliers and fell through the small gap in the clothe down into the crank housing! i have taken the engine out and tried shaking it out, but i cant hear anything!

what i do? do i need to take the whole crankhousing out? help!!!

u took the whole engine out? as in case out of swingarm?

I had something similar happen when a piece of the stock piston broke off and fell down in there, siezed my crank to only move a certain rotation. I dumped all liquids and flipped it upside down and played with the crank while shaking it and eventually the piece(s) fell out and i had this same crank work for the entire time i rode the spree.

try that and see what happens.
