just picked up a 86 spree have some questions

Post by 1fstss »

1. the reading i did says the 86 had a kick start... this moped has no kick start
2. It does not run but has compression, spark, and the plug is getting wet. Does it have to have a battery in it to run? the guy i got it from was spinning the motor over with a drill.
3. i put my batterycharger on the pos. and neg. wires in 2v all the lights minus the headlight came on but we went to click over the startr and it just went click, is this because the cranking amps arent there?
4 any fun facts i should know?

Thanks a ton!!

Greetings:

Go easy with an automotive charger. MouseWheels can supply the info on optimal charging Amps, but IIRC it's 500 mAmps. Leave it on at least a few hours. If it's too old, it won't take a charge and will need replacement.

Nobody knows less than me about Sprees, but I have read that only the '84s and '85s lacked the kicker. The VIN sticker should confirm it's an '86. If so, perhaps an earlier engine has been swapped in? Still it seems to me that the swapper would also keep the '86 belt cover and its kickstart pedal. Weird. :?

The manual says;

1984-85, 0.4 amps for 3 to 15 hours. It also says "Quick charge shall only be done in and emergency, slow charging is preferred."

For 1986-87, 0.3 amps for 5 hours or for a quickie 3.0 amps for only 30 MINUTES. It also says; "Quick charge shall only be done in and emergency, slow charging is preferred."

And "Charging with excessive current and or too fast may cause battery failure."

you guys did not read what he wrote.

HE HAS NO BATTERY he is using his charger as power. Its a really bad Idea to do this first it will not provide enough amps to turn your starter, second it you continue playin with it like that it will take out your rectifier, go ahead ask me how I know. Get a battery at WalMart I just bought one yesterday for $32.56 out the door.

My 86 has a kicker :) and my 84 does not :(

Vette's right. Wheel-Bears can't read.
Some heavy-duty chargers (the kind the Tow Trucks carry) have a 12V supply with enough amps to run a starter. Fortunately most do not. Even if you get a new Squall-Mart battery, I recommend you set it up on the slow charger for a few hours before installing.

bought a battery, trickle charged it at 2 amps for 2 hours, tossed it in, found the main power wire dangeing in the fairing, so i made new battery loops., also found the whole grounding system was melted (old melt) replaces all with 12awg wire, finished that turned the key and it fired right up! my oil light keeps popping on but it is full of 2 stroke oil (looks like polaris oil to me)
But yeah it has no kicker on it :( so the seller must have lied or not known... he got the ped on a traid along with a trail bike. he spent 1 hour working on it and gave up. also i can not get the flywheel cover on... it was off when i bought it and it doesnt seem to fit at all, so i just left it off. so now i get to use the search button and look for free mods :) id like it to go more than 25 with my chunky butt on it :)

p.s. where is the vin plate?

also i can not get the flywheel cover on...
If you mean the cooling fan shroud, be vewy, vewy caowful. Forced-air-cooled engines need those in place or they won't run for long.

If you locate the two wires that go to the oil tank, check out that float switch according to the manual. I suspect either a faulty switch - they do get stuck - or something still scwewy with the wiring. Nice job so far!

Greetings:

I recall reading there were at least a couple different versions of the shroud. Maybe yours is from a different model year? Pics would help the Sprognisenti advise.

Greetings:

So as an '86, unless Honda-san produced a few early-year bikes sans kicker, someone swapped the motor for an earlier one. Or for an '85 Aero?!

HEY! I just clarified what you said, so don't place all the blame on me. Man what a rat. Throw me under the bus in a micro second. :eyeroll: Now I have to fill out this and submit it to the authorities.
