One last speed run before the dreded winter

Post by speedy_aero »

so i have been reading on this forum for a while but just sitting back watching as a guest decided to finally join today :)

so i ride a 86 aero pretty much stock. I have ditched most the plastics and upgraded to a hard wood floorboard, and some larger tires and replaced the carb with a cheep ebay one.

So its getting to be that time where we think about storing our bikes(here in North Dakota) :x along with that we also do not have you you know as hills, around here so the winds get pretty strong. Today being a windy day i took out the scoot. The goal was to see just how fast i could get her going, i can normal get the spedo to read 37. since there were no hills i headed over to the 12th street bridge. On the top of the bridge i was going a little over 40 and then came the downhill. so i was doing 40 some and it starts to back fire. Seams pretty weird to me i slow down and ride home with no problems. Was i just over revving the engine? Could have the timing gotten off? or is this just a freak accident?

Sounds like it leaned out on you. You probably need a bigger main jet.

will it matter at normal speeds? and will i get worse power if it is running on the rich side as to the lean side? or is it more of a guess and check thing.

i have never once seen a white plug in all the times i have pulled it.

Yes, it will matter at anything above about 1/3 throttle. Too rich is better than too lean but it is never a good idea to run too lean as it can and will lead to a mealted piston, AKA a blown motor. It does not have to be a white plug to be too lean. Besides, unless you do a proper plug chop, all you are seeing on the plug is whatever your idle mixture is at. Power will be down if you are to rich or too lean.

That would depend on the brand of carb you have. Chances are your local scooter/motorcycle/ATV shop could get them for you.
