Bearings or gears?

Post by mr pibbs »

JUst got a new bke in the shop and thought i would ask for some more input.

Crazy Whirring sound from the final reduction above 15ish mph. Felt like a large amount of play in the gears.

Opened it up with a lot of metal in the oil. Looked like mercury beause of all the metal in there.

THe gears feel scratched and somewhat worn. Are they for sure part of the problem?
Will probably replace the bearings regaurdless.

Thanks for the insight.

In this type of situation you HAVE to replace both the gears AND the bearings. So it is pretty much irrelevant what the actual problem is.
