questions ('94 BBK Running 367 Degrees)

Post by dun rite »

Hello: yup another noob been lurking for a long time. scooter in question is a 1994 honda elite sa50p that has had the exhaust unrestricted. Have installed a chopchop 50mm bbk, ported the case to match jug. (sorry no pics) didn't really enlarge exhaust port only smoothed and polished. ground intake rough edges and polished. 100main jet installed. the needle jet has j68 stamped on it. running factory exhaust which is probably original and way louder than it should be. using factory air box and filter. drilled out extra holes for better flow. Added a trail tech cht for monitoring. Have new drive belt. & rollers.
The biggest question for now is. what temperatures should i be looking for? After idling on the stand for about 15 20 mins the gauge said 165 deg. After about a 1 mile ride up hill doing 25 or so on the speedo the gauge got to 367, i started to get a little worried so turned around and came home, it cooled right down. How hot would be considered to hot?????? and when should i be concerned??? Sorry for the lengthy post and any thing i forgot to add. Thanks

325 while cruzing would be a good number to shoot for

The temps spike after wot to closed throttle by as much as 50 degrees.

My cht sees 375 pretty regularly and I have the same bore

450 degrees would probably start doing real damage :nervous:

What oil/gas ratio are you mixing at?

What carb are you using?

knew i forgot things. using a split throttle cable and premix of 50:1 using fuchs silkolene recommended by honda shop. might have mixed 40:1 been a while since mixed it up.

Am using the stock carburetor with 100 main jet. needle jet stamped j68

will change carb and exhaust after a successful break in. thinking of a 21mm oko with a v8 pipe? want to wait on further expense until it doesnt break. last bbk got 200 miles on and then the circlip came out and ended on top of piston. (ouch) honda shop said probably didnt orientate the circlip with open end facing bottom of piston. hope that was all.

Thanks for the replys. Sounds like i shouldnt worry to much about the 367deg. going up a moderate hill although the day was cool.
Another problem I discovered today was a cracked exhaust pipe ( would explain some of the extra loudness) . Welded the crack shut and the exhaust no longer sounds like a dirt bike which makes the wife happy.
Strangest thing about fixing the crack is the scooter now idles at about 208, 31deg higher than before?? And would not idle without increasing idle speed and readjusting carb.
What should I be concerned about??? dont think the pipes plugged due to noise level. Any ideas????

Greetings:

In welding that crack, you fixed what was probably a significant air leak. All tuning bets are off, and you get to start over. I'm not surprised that it idles warmer now, but I'm gonna bet that the peak temps go Down.
