ok nvm. i got the d*** thing out, but i am worried about my brand new crank bearings. i dont remember what it felt like to turn the crank over by hand. it certainly doesnt turn freely but it isnt rough and there is no play. is this in the realm of normal?

Yes the mag/stator and seals will put a little resistance on it. Look to see if there is metal shavings on the crank and in the case. You might have to rinse the case out if there is.
Nothing like getting stroked!

I feel for you.. Had that happen recently myself. Personally felt safer for me to split the case and clean everything, didn't trust just using a flashlight and mirrors to see all.
Have you removed jug yet? if not it probably won't turn freely. good luck
