new to the scooter world- lots of questions! '84 aero 50

Post by biyonca131 »

Just got an '84 Honda Aero 50 - Ive read alot on here and am a little confused now... Is an Aero 50 the same as a Spree or Elite Aero? I read about the Taz bore kit that can make the spree go faster, what can I use on my Aero 50? Same thing? And where do I get that Taz bore kit? Having a hard time finding parts for this scooter, we think it needs an alternator?

So far we have taken off the muffler and cleaned it up a bit and replaced the head gasket (there was alot of white smoke before, much better now) and we are going to clean up the carburetor next (found that on the forum- very good pics). It only goes about 25mph and up to 30mph if you push it and are a lightweight (when my husband rides it he stalls it out on little hills).

I guess what I really want to know is what is the best thing we can do/add to this little bike to help it out and boost it up, get it going 35mph atleast or to not stall out with someone a little heavier?

Thanks!!!

wow nice find, and yes the parts for the early model aeros are pretty hard to find. I have no knowledge of pre 87 aero so not really sure about the engine at all but there are plenty of folks on here who have aeros just like that i am sure they will help you out

Aero is NOT the same as Spree or Elite.....bbk for upgrade on Spree available from forum member, tazland001.....I dont know if they interchange, suspect not.....the cheapest way to freshen your motor is to replace piston rings, provided the cylinder is within specs to accept standard rings.....if worn, cylinder can be machined oversize and ring accordingly......... :coolcruise: ........ :urban:

Thanks MM, but what if the rings or piston or cylinder is messed up - would it be easier to just put a new motor in or take it apart and try to fix it? And if the muffler is super clogged that would slow it down alot right? Is it safe to put holes in it like some people do? Or just replace that too?

Something I did not know is until I was looking, was that the 1983 and '84 Aero used a 12 mm carb (.47") while the 1985 thru 1987 used a 14 mm carb (.55") so there is an instant upgrade if you can find a carb that will clear the shock.

Okay, I will have to look into that! Weve got it going up hills without stalling now! Its very sluggish when you first take off then it just bolts forward (faster than our '09 ruckus) then it evens out. But it seems like theres alot of oil getting into the fuel mix and making a large cloud of blueish white smoke - but only when its being held at a higher rpm for a longer consistent time. Any ideas how to fix that? Or why its doing that?
