89 elite e clutch options

Post by Jimmy l »

Hey guys, I recently picked up an 89 elite e and thanks to this board I got it up and running. I've still got couple issues to address and one is the clutch. It was not disengaging at all when I got it which cause the bike to bog miserably from a stop. So I pulled the clutch apart and bent the hooks on the springs a bit and that helped but it's still not right.

So, what options do I have for it? Obviously OEM new or used but is there anything aftermarket? Maybe a clutch from another model that will work? Like a GY6 clutch or something. I'm not really looking for any huge performance upgrades just cheap, available and "works" but I don't mind cutting the cover if I need to. Thanks in advance.

The Clutch springs from 88-93 were junk. put a set from a 94-01 and you'll be fine. My friend just had the same issue!

Greetings:

The spring tension is only one factor in cluch Disengagement. The othe is crud/corrosion at the pivot points. The clutch comes apart all the way, usually with E-Clips retaining the pivoting shoes. Knock those off, carefully, and inspect the pivots and any place where friction may be preventing prompt return. Clean and lube sparingly so your grease doesn't shower the entire assembly and the clutch you have may be made to work just fine. If not, used Spree/Elite "E" clutches should be affordable and easy to find here or on fEeBaY.
