SA50 Elite gear case problem?

Post by bonesv »

Just want to ask if anyone has had this problem before? I drained the oil out of a af16 gear case, pulled the cover and I noticed this black soot inside mixed with the oil. When I tapped the drive shaft out of the cover, the bearing stayed on the shaft and it has some burn marks on the outside of the bearing. I want to ask the forums' experience on this. Anyone with direct experience with bearing spin inside the gear case of an AF16E motor, feel free to comment about this question. I have some pics here: Image Image Image Image
 Wow, someone forgot to oil that gasket!

The dark thick oil means no one changed that oil out in a long time. That's why that bearing spun.your going to have to notch the bearing seat on the outer gear cover before you press in a new bearing or if its to worn out, your going to have to jb weld that bearing in or get a sleave pressed in as the last resort.

Uhh ooh, I think I'll just replace the cover and use this one for a stock motor. The risk might be too high for a modded engine. I have an extra late model cover. Thank you for your input and suggestion. It was just as I thought, Toasted! Just never saw this before. Thanks Baka! and Thanks Bear for getting the pics on the page for us. Happy Trails! :)

Another question; Would it seem reasonable to replace all the bearings even though, by feel, they seem to be good? Of course, the spun bearing replace, but the other two are in reasonably good condition in my own opinion. Just a question to anyone who might have experienced this before. I am going to be using this motor for a 70cc daily driver, with speeds about 60 mph. Thanks as always, and Happy Trails! :D

If one went bad,I wouldn't trust the others.your just asking for trouble if you leave those bearings in there if your going to run a kit and gears

Thanks for reading dun rite. Yes. Up until somewhere in 1998 Honda changed it to 3, eliminating the final shaft bearing in the cover. As a result, the final shaft has a larger diameter end where the bearing used to be and it is fitted with a thrust washer. The cut-off serial number is #2031629/#2031630 starts the 3-bearing style, this happened sometime in 1998. So there are two different final shafts for the AF16 gear case depending on the cover style/year/number. The 3 bearings used in both cases retain the same part numbers and the seals are also the same. 8) The outer (inside the brake pad area) bearing is sealed, thereby not needing replacing. I will replace the two on the drive shaft only as this is a 3-bearing style (2001). :thumbwink: Happy Trails!

94-98 dual bearing cover. 99-01 single bearing. so that 98 guess is about right. the late 98 which they call the 99 model is what it is
