elite 50 sr only 45 miles per tank

Post by schols44 »

Hi there,

I just bought a Honda 50 sr 1998 to drive around campus. I don' know anything about mecanical part of a scooter so I am going to need your help. I get only 45 miles per tank which seems to be a terrible gas mileage. I think my tank capacity is 1.2 or 1.3 gallon. What can I do to get a better gas mileage? Also, i know i need to change the air cleaner element because it is falling a part (like it is broke in 2 pieces which leaves a big space where air can come in. Do you guys think it might be the cause of this low mileage?

Thanks for your answers.

Im gonna get a new filter element today at the local scooter shop. There are only a few hills. If i replace the carbu, will it get fixed? Also, the scooter had been sitting for a long time before i buy it, so the carbu might be durty? Can it be the reason? How many miles am i supposed to get per tank? 80?

Greetings:

A gas leak below the petcock may not show up because it only leaks while the engine runs. Start 'er up and let it idle and then check for drips. Avoid using a book of matches for illumination though... :nervous:

Since it has been sitting for a while like you said.. It wouldnt hurt to competely clean the carb.. Replace the fuel lines also.. And remember to drain any gas that might have been in there.. Good luck

How do you know you are only getting 45 miles per tank? Are you considering empty to be what is shown on the gauge? How much fuel are you putting in it after 45 miles?

i'm going to fill in the tank tomorrow. I don't use the gauge, i just look inside the tank. I can't take out the spark plug cap from the ignition coil. So i can't access the spark plug. Is there a way to do that. I don't want to pull too hard on it because i don't want to break anything. when i try to pull it out nothing is moving, as if the cap was fixed with a screw. Should i pull harder?
