Honda Spree- Stock Engine Swap- NO SPARK

Post by Guitargraham »

So recently, my bearings went bad in my '86 spree engine. Ordered another engine- turned out to be an '85 engine, and all was going cool until, no spark!
Hooked up everything else, still no spark. THEN I noticed an extra wire and tracked it to the bottom of the case where there was a small magnet like thang.
After switching out the magnet thing, the wires all matched up perfectly, but still no spark! Keep in mind a week ago, my old engine had spark and ran fine.

84/85 Sprees have a 2 wire spark trigger coil, 86/87 have a 1 wire spark trigger

You can swap the 86 over to 85, and leave the green wire on the 85 harness unconnected. It is a ground connection.

Change to 86/87 spark trigger used the case to supply ground when bolted to the crankcase.

---
IMHO - It points towards an issue outside the 1 wire/2 wire pickup, you have no spark with either pickup installed yet should have spark with either.

First place I'd start is any connections changed during the swap - coil, starter ground, stator connections etc.

I've already checked basic connections, but I didn't find anything! Everything is plugged in all the way. Thank you for the knowledge!

Alright, I've spent all night and this morning trying to figure this out!
Bought a new NGK spark plug, no spark.
Charged up the battery even more, no spark.
Hooked it up to my old engine, NO SPARK.

Even though it is not your problem, the 85 engine into a 86 Spree just simply needs that green wire for the pulse coil grounded, no need to change the pickup coil.
The alternator exciter coil must also work in addition to the pulse coil they are both needed as well as the cdi unit.
The owners manual shows the wire diagram as well as all the resistance values to measure.

With the ignition switch on and the kill switch at "run", the black wire with white tracer at the CDI box must not have continuity to ground.
Exciter coil should measure 750-1200 ohms from Black wire with red tracer to ground.
