there was once a wise man on here who said a 50/50 mix of acetone and atf was the best rust buster. Theres even a chart on here somewhere showing a scientific type experiment for proof. What type of heat did you try? propane? acetalene?

Good luck with it.

Greetings:

Parked for a decade with the parking brake locked in salty air? Or ridden on salted roads?

1986 Aero "Timmy" had this issue. Check the rear brake handle for stiffness. See if the wheel can rotate at all. If so You may have to knock the snot out of the hub section. Timmy's brake linings actually came off the shoes and stuck to the hub!

If not, the splines have seized. Remove the trans cover, use a sacrificial axle nut and whack the axle from the end toward the left and it should pop out.

I am not wheelman but the answer to your question is Yes. He mentioned using a sacrificial nut to put on the shaft so the axle is not damaged from striking it. You could also utilize a piece of wood like a chunk of 2x4 as well to create a protective barrier between your hammer and the shaft/ axle. If you have a brass hammer (which most people don't have) that would work without the wood or a plastic mallet. Have fun! I would avoid using a torch because you will end up melting the shaft seal :surprise:

I just replaced the rear final drive axle on mine this week. Not to bad at all. Remember there is 3oz of oil in the trans case. So have a bucket ready!!
