in the book chapter 4 page 11 will show you one thing that is not right .... it looks like your missing the brow spacer the goes between the carb and manifold... what kind of air flter do you have on it???

I only ran without the cooling shrouds a couple of blocks about 20 on a cool night

Hey Black... if it runs consistent then you are good. You know the importance of the shourds now.... you are fine if you put them back on.

You have an aftermarket carb and air filter. I would suspect that you someone may have put a larger piston / jug & possibly a pipe?

If not maybe they just gave up on cleaning the original carb. The stock spree has an Keihin carb that jetted and setup for stock spree air-box.

I have had luck with stock setups and brought may stock scoots back from the dead... but we are not here to talk about that.

You maybe running rich or lean... hard to tell without a plug chop. Your setup does not have by-starter (auto choke for starting). I would ensure the humped tube on intake - where the oil is normally shot in from the pump - is plugged now. It is located between the carb and the intake (reeds) side of the motor. It is shown in your pictures above.

pop the head off and have a look and a measure also a new plug and a proper plug with a new plug and the cooling shrouds on
