Any way to tell if an odometer has rolled over on an Elite?

Post by Wiscompton »

I am looking at a Honda Elite, 1998, with 1300 on the clock.

At a 1998 its just as likely that she has rolled over as that she has 1300 original miles.

I couldn't make the determination by the wheels, which was my first thought.

nope not really, if it doesn't look pretty new then I'm sure it's rolled over.
Odometer doesn't really tell me that much IMO since I rather look at how well (or not) it is running.
I'd rather have a higher mileage machine that is running well than a lower miles and running like crap (unless it's an easy fix ;) ).

If its any consilation, I'm picking up a 1997 Honda elite 80 this weekend. It's only got 1,920 miles on the odometer. She looks real clean, but the test drive will be the tell tail. Drive it around a good bit. Shut it down and look for any oil or gas leaks. Make sure it starts back up after you shut it off. Check the oil level. Check the wear of the tires and the condition of the battery.

How much do they want for it? I struck a deal for $500 for the one I'm picking up tomorrow.

I got it for $325. Titled and running but with a flat rear tire. The tube blew out at the valve.

It starts runs and idles really well.

I am leaning towards not rolled over because the seat is perfect.

Also generally speaking higher mileage SA50s have one of the exhaust mounting points snapped off the case, and these are both intact.

I suppose even if it had rolled over it would be NBD because its the restricted model elite, 1999.

At a top speed of 25mph there is really no stress on the components to speak of.

This is what she looks like.

Yeah I got her all cleaned up and riding around.

I always get nervous when I go to swap out the rear tire/tube on a scooter thats been sitting in a snow bank all winter.

If you aren't careful or if the nuts are rusted or the exhaust hit a curb wrong you can bust a stud off in the cylinder and then you are in for trouble.

Rear brake was seized up so I had to take care of that too.

Other than that she was fine and ready to ride.

Still no idea if the odometer rolled over or not, but it starts super easy and has plenty of power.
