To Buy or not to buy, that is the question?
Hello everyone, have a chance to pickup a 1989 Honda Elite 50cc LX for 100.00. The scooter is in good condition plastic wise, everything looks great, but the motor is SHOT. Must have been ran without oil the piston is burned and taken out of the engine. I can get a new jug and piston for 50 or 60 bucks, and am considering rebuilding this engine.
Any thoughts?

Greetings:
Getting an engine back together takes an afternoon. Finding a scooter that hasn't been thrashed by sun, rain, rust, etc. is more challenging. There's more than $100 in the nice-looking plastics alone if you get bored. Find someone's AF 16 engine for sale and you have a pretty nice scooter for under $500.

Re: To Buy or not to buy, that is the question?
Thanks everyone, going to pick it up this Tuesday 9 December, hope to get a jug and a piston off ebay for just over 55.00. Once I pick it up and get it back to the house, I'll post some pictures of it before I start working on it.
Just put a carb, throttle cable and a twist grip on a little pit bike that a buddy bought, got her running, starts on the second kick, he picked it up for almost nothing and we spent a total of 47.03 on parts and have it sold for 400.00 tomorrow! Whoo Hoo.

Ok, as promised, here are some photo's of my 100.00 scooter. You'll note in one of the pictures that the wrist pin clip is welded to the side of the Piston
I knew the motor was shot, so a rebuild is in order. Now I suspect that either the engine was ran without oil or that the oil injection system doesn't work, any words from the wise on how to check it?
Here's the pics.

Ok, I don't know if these pictures will work or not but going to give it a try. Guess can only upload 3 pics per post.

Any Ideas on how to check the oil injector system to make sure it is working?

Re: To Buy or not to buy, that is the question?
Greetings:
Checking oil injector, first method:
1. Start scooter.
2. Open throttle all the way. Go 1 mile.
3. Stop and make a U-Turn.
4. If you make it back home, the oil injector is working.
Second method:
1. Mix up a batch of 32:1 fuel/oil. (3%) Drain tank and replace with the premixed fuel all the way to the top of the tank.
2. Disconnect the oil line to the carb/mani. PLUG the fitting on the manifold.
3. Route the small oil line to a container zip-tied somewhere.
4. Ride for a few hours.
5. Measure the oil in your container.
6. Measure the fuel required to refill the fuel tank.
7. Do some Math. Fuel volume should be about 30-50 times the oil volume.
