1985 elite 80 hard start

Post by bavareze »

Hello guys!

my elite 80 is starting hard when cold. it takes a while to start and then, after start, it will barely idle and sometimes stop by itself. if i try to rev it, as soon as I open the throttle the engine stalls. the only way to have it running is to let it idle for a long while and then * the throttle a few times more and more until I can get the RPM up, rev it like this until fully warm, then it drives normal way.

I replaced spark plug but I think this is due to a lean condition in the carburetor.

What do you think? how do I adjust further?

Thanks!

The symptoms you describe indicate a dirty carburetor.
Remove, soak, blow with compressed air, and confirm that all passages in the carb have good flow.

thanks. from what i read there, it looks like it might also be an issue with the bystarter, causing it to run to lean

Certainly the bystarter will cause a hard-to-start issue.
After initial warm-up, the bystarter plays no part in accelleration.
There is a very small pin-hole inside the float bowl that allows gas to fill the bystarter reservoir.
Make sure you verify that OPEN.
While the Wikispreedia does not address the CV style carb that Elite 80 uses,
cleaning is the same.
Additional care should be taken to inspect and verify the condition of the diaphragm on the slide.
Carb cleaning is a tedious and exacting procedure, and often takes several repeats of the process to achieve complete functionality.

FWIW I just replaced my bystarter for less than $6.
The generic units on Ebay are a direct fit. I ordered one for 99 cents plus a few bucks shipping. Came all the way from China in two weeks and works perfectly.

Yeah I have a couple ch80's. The generic gy6 bystarter on ebay was too cheap for me to pass up and when I got it I immediately smiled as its the same part others are selling for $30.

There will be a red two prong connector. Just cut it. They give you plenty of wire.
I ride a LOT so I should see if it holds up pretty quickly. So far the scooter is very happy!
I wish there were more active discussion on CH80's... I love mine despite the headaches I've had.
Edit to add-
After several days, the scooter is starting and idling smoother than ever. Ordered another to have a cheap spare.

There's plenty of Elite 80 scoots out there...
This forum obviously attracts the Spree and Elite 50 crowd.
I won't promise more 80 discussion, but have you looked at forum on motorscooterguide.com ?

Couldn't find a forum at http://www.motorscooterguide.com/
I've found the most discussion on ch80's on here or Total Ruckus.
