It won't start - wet spark plug

Post by micbergsma »

Hey guys,

I was not able to get Elite 72cc polini to start with kickstart. The spark plug is soaked! I cleaned the carb and put it back on and kickstart again, got a few backfires. It does make sparks when I test it against the metal frame.
It was running fine a year ago.

The carburetor is Keihin PE 24mm, jets never changed since I got it in the mail.
I am not sure if I need to change the jets size or other way to get it working again?

Greetings:

If it ran well with the current jets, there's no reason to believe that they need to be changed. Look somewhere else for the issue.

Did it run with the current carb and jets? Try a new sparkplug they can refuse to fire when installed had it happen more than once

Just maybe, since it "ran when parked",...over the time of storage, gas has drained down through the carb and accumulated in the crankcase, thus causing the no-start, wet plug situation....just maybe...

Edit : Later in this thread it is mentioned that the oil tank is also likely to drain down
into the crankcase during inactivity. Follow their advice to evacuate the oil,
and search this site for other threads that have dealt with the same problem.
If the oil has not drained down, then removing the spark plug and spinning the engine over repeatedly
will clear most of the gas that remains in the cylinder. Gas that has made it down into the lower case is more difficult to deal with in 2-stroke engines. The tip to remove the muffler is very good advice.

If I do the drain... just remove the cylinder head then turn the bike upside down to drain?

Just remove the sprak plu and lines to the carb and turn it over and roll the egine by hand, same as a dirtbike. Should drain out in like 6 roll overs enough to start, also check to see if something is nesting in your pipe. Like stickbugs >_>

How long did the bike sit since it ran?I have to go along with Mike and add to that.A recently purchased SA 50 I dragged home not only did that but the check valve on the oil injection apparently failed and absolutely filled the crankcase with it's own premix.I pulled the plug and Cvt cover and spin it over with a drill to save the restart and clear the crankcase.I also pulled the pipe so it didn't fill up but boy was it a messy deal.

Flip it over take the plug off, put a small bag over the top end and crank it over. Just remove the shroud and plug. Also the first tank with it running again run a little seafoam.

Exhaust is good, no nest bug or anything, I put air compressor air in it, all clear.

I removed the exhaust and spark plug before I flipped it over, crank it many times, only see a little of oil spray out of it, not much...

I guess I should try put everything together and try to start again

Get you a spay bottle mix 65% soap 35% water. Sprits around the cylinder base, turn the key no start sprits the intake base turn it over again. If it still won't start I recommend pulling the intake and inspect the reed for damage.

There is a reason when a bbk won't fire just like a custom built Chevy.
People playing with my clone I let it slide with em, still tipping on 3.0's belt ramping the CVT ON PGOS!

The reed have no damage and inspected the piston, rings, cylinder, all look great. Put everything back together and still won't start at all... so frustrating

Could be your stator?? Maybe dirty/dusty causing it not to have a strong enough spark happen to me on another bike of mines.. I took off the fly wheel an lightly sanded the coils with 300grit.. Test 4 spark b4 bolting flywheel back..

I'd Take out the spark plug first. Give a squirt of gum out carb cleaner inside the cylinder just to help ignition. Put a new plug in. See if it fires and stays running. Might work itself out.
