1983 Aero NH80 Variator issues

Post by jakubman1 »

After correctly installing my variator on my scooter one of my roller weights keep coming out of position and keeping the variator from moving in and out smoothly like it should. After putting the roller weight back in and re installing everything i would test the action of it with the cover off. Works just like it should. Nice and smooth. As soon as i put the cover back on and drive it up and down the road i come back and my variator is back to sticking in the same position . What is going on here? Its my roller weight being misplaced and keeping the variator in a fixed position.

when i install the variator with the ramp iam super careful it goes on correctly.
The weights have NO flat spots the are new.

Greetings:

Roller Measurements? I have no experience with the 80, but seem to recall they use bigger rollers than the NB/SE/SA variators. For sure keep the faces squeezed together until it's on the shaft. If you do that with the SA variator, there's no way they can dislocate.

I just weighed the OEM ones. 15.8 grams. I read the dimension from Bear 45/70. An old post he said that the dimension were 18x14.

I set them side by side and they look identical. I put it back together and the variator is whizzing and functioning as it should. This time i took off the oil catcher plate. Gonna see if that makes any diffrence

Alright so after removing the grease plate . There is NO difference. I dont believe its my clutch or belt. Both have been replaced recently.

Today riding it i heard a squeal noise on take off. My stuttering also is only on take offs. Very slow pick up and boggy. Its somewhere in the drive area. Still tops out fine. I put everything back together like usual. Could it be my roller weights?
Ill be taking measurements on the weights tommorow

I do have bran new OEM ones also

Greetings:

Symptoms suggest the clutch is the problem. Out-of-round bell will judder on take-off, squeal and overheat, losing grip. A worn belt might do it too.

I have a new belt on there OEM. I have the clutch apart and dont see anything crazy. It was re lined with kevlar and bell is cleaned up. My weights are still in place when i took it off. i dont see any unuasual wear on the belt. No unusual wear on clutch pads. ill take come photos soon. Its clean in belt area. Also installed new yellow main spirng recently . No movement on crank of rear axle.

Should i put it under a load with the brake with cover off to see whats happening?

I can feel with my fingers the ribs on the clutch bell though

Greetings:

You can't expect "undue" wear on the belt to show up on inspection. A worn belt is defined by its remaining width compared to new spec. You have to measure.

Revving the bike on stand isnt accurate to the variator, if you run it on ground and its squeeking and still not erasing the line your rollers are too light and your clutch is either too tight of triplets or slidding. I had a new gy6 clutch that the bell was so warped from 1 hard launch and ride it literly rolled in a circle on the floor. It was bad and its easy to do. My newer dio clutch bell is already bright blue from my 7,000rpm launches.

Edit you may need heavier rollers to push the plate further out. Idk but I know it needs something.

Triplet springs are the 3 in your clutch and the contra is the large one.
