Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Ok so i have a 85 spree. When i go over bumps it was to die out. Clean air filter. Good reeds. Good sparkplug. Fresh gas. Just cleaned the carb again. Petcock works fine.
Pretty sure its something to do with the carb cause my last ride a month ago it cut out and wouldnt start back up after hitting speed bumps. Yesterday i was tapping the side of the carb with a peice of wood and it started and idled perfect till i left my driveway then wouldnt start at all. There is gas getting to the carb i check by using the drain bolt on bottom of carb. Possibly float valve?

No stock engine

I need to find some new haters...the ones I have are starting to like me.

Ordered ! Hopefully this is the culprit !
Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Its also a slim possibility that the actual float itself has lost it's buoyancy. Its common with old cork-type floats but not so much with sealed plastic ones....but not impossible.

Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Cork screw ? The 1 I have in there is original. I shook it and didn't see or hear any gas in there .
Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Ha! no...in the olden days, the actual item used as a carb float was a piece of cork materiel. Over time, they would break down and get saturated to the point where their buoyancy was compromised.jakubman1 wrote:Cork screw ?

Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Greetings:
From personal experience, the first thing I'd check is the carb mount, particularly if you're using no air-box. The unsupported carb is rigidly mounted to the engine, and if the tire rolls over choppy pavement it will open a gap if the mount isn't rock solid. That will cut combustion quicker'n a Kardashian can inhale a line.
The next thing I'd check is the connections to and from the coil. I had a low-voltage connector go loose for some reason, and hitting a sharp bump was like turning off the key.
I really don't see how a float that um... uh Doesn't would cause sudden cut-outs going over bumps. It would overfill the bowl & stall from flooding without the assistance of bumps.

Carb is solid. Gonna start checking connections soon.
Thanks

-- long shot --
Is the bystater air valve (brass collar around the needle valve) seized in the carb bowl?

I dont think its seized. Choke wise seems to be doing great. Should i polish the area?

Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
You issue could be unrelated to the bystarter circuit. Running the Honda Service Manual bystarter test to confirm air valve open/close would be the last step.jakubman1 wrote:I dont think its seized. Choke wise seems to be doing great. Should i polish the area?
FYI - The threads below are long, but both resulted in fixing the Die on Bumps issue.
Links:
1) Original Spree bump die issue info - Early Spree carb body + seized bystarter air valve = dies on bumps
2) Spree dies on bumps, due to Early Spree carb + carb body damage
Re: Spree cuts out when going over bumps
Dang your good. I do have a longer bolt with a shaved nut on the front side of my carb. Ill check the bystarter and see.
I do have a good carb body top buut it came of an 86 carb. I have the 85.
