1986 Honda Spree Scooter has trouble running in the RAIN!

Post by chickenlivermike »

So here goes. I have had my spree running since last April and it has ran great. I have put almost 900 miles on this scooter with no problems whatsoever. The only mild things that it does, are that it sometimes dies at stops and the scooter's takeoff is not so fast. But other than that it has no problems getting up to 31-33 mph. Now here comes the bad. When i am out and about and it starts to rain the scooter runs fine until the rain gets harder and it starts to bog down and almost not run at all. It will run for a block or two then keel over and die. I NEED HELP TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM. Could it be an intake problem? a stator problem? Has anyone else had this same problem? I also only run the scooter off of the kickstart and no battery is hooked up to it. Any help would be appreciated....thanks. MIKE

This is a classic example of a bad plug wire. The insulation is oldand the moisture in the air lets in start arc when you put any kind of a load on the engine.

Electrical, the airbox is pretty high and dry so I doubt its sucking water. There is a big connection bundle at the engine mount, clean and grease them all. Also check for arcing on the coil wire and grease the spark plug connector. Grease up all the electrical connections.
I am not a mechanic, nor do I play one on TV. Actually my advice is probably worth slightly less than what you pay to view it.

If you are gonna grease your electrical connects, get so dielectric grease at the auto parts store. That's what is designed for.
