Auto by-starter

Post by Sean »

Can anyone tell me exactly what this is, a auto by starter? Is it just an electric choke? Also, how important is the 10 ohm value specified in the manual? Mine is reading 40 ohms. The scooter is a 1985 spree sq-50.
Thanks in advance.

Most of my money is spent on scooterparts. The rest is just wasted.

I don't know a smidgeon as much as most of the experts on this forum do. But I DO happen to know something about that ByStarter gizmo.
It's kind of like a woman; a good one is great - a bad one will leave ya stranded, angry and broke.

First, if your unit reads 40ohms, it's likely toast. With that much resistance, the little wax device in the unit's head won't receive enough juice to force that brass snout into your carb. Simply put, your bike will:

1. Run like sh*t

2. Won't start

3. WILL start and run like sh*t

You've got two options:

1. Rebuild repair the unit (not for the faint of heart, in my opinion)

2. Replace the unit. BEWARE!!!! Those cheap $29 eBuy ByFarters are JUNK!!!! Don't ask me how I know this. Get a proper Honda type from this guy:

uspmale@yahoo.com

EDIT: Your '85 Spree uses bullet connectors on the ByStarter; the 86/87 Sprees featured plugs. Try to get the proper connectors if you order a replacement. Or - snip off the connectors on the old unit with a few inches of wire intact - then solder those onto the new unit if it isn't equipped with bullet connector ends.

These are my opinions. I've earned 'em. :)
