BELT HELP? PLEASE....
Howdy,
I recently acquired a "dead" 1984/85? Spree online and thanks to this site i was able to get it running again (Cleaned Carb And New battery)
WELL, i was out cruising and i heard a "snap", walked home and belt was destroyed.
What SIZE belt do i need to buy?
Where to purchase?

get it from your local honda shop or take it to an automotive shop and have them match it up. i think bear has a number for it. it will ride a little higher and give a little more pick up.

if you go through honda its gonna run you $30. You can use an auto v belt. get 1/2 inch by 24 cogged. that will run you about 6 bucks.

automotive belts are only rated at 3,500 rpms and are not under a torque load, thats the reason you pay $30 for the right belt and live to tell about it.

so your telling me that my 50cc spree is gonna have more torque than an automotive engine? i cant see that. ive been running this belt without any problems. whats the worst thats gonna happen its gonna snap in the sealed case and im gonna have to walk home. i cant see that little belt having enough force to come out the side. It certainly isnt anymore of a safety risk than running a 20+ year old crack belt.

The belt number I have is AX-24 and it should work for all manufactures.

Looking at Honda's parts catalog, Deepinnaharta Honda lists the stock belt for over $30. However they have Aftermarket catalogs for just about everything, and there's a Gates Powerlink that's just $17. It appears to be identical to Honda's badged belt.
Automotive belts drive low-resistance systems like power steering pumps and AC compressors. The car engines are obviously more powerful, but the stress on the belts is much less.

I think I paid $14 for my belt and that was special ordered because I didn't want to drive to The big city and the price included a special order and shipping and handling cost of $5.65 that included an 11% sales tax. incase your looking. the number for the belt i have is GATES 7240. i was only getting 26 mph before and now i get 34 stock except the belt.

And how do you rate rpm for a belt when there are so many different size pulleys on an auto/truck? RPM don't mean zip to a belt. How about IPM (inches of belt per minute)? Never seen that rating.

there are alot of things that are said on pure speculation. i'm currently running a non-cogged belt because everyone said not to, but not why not to. so i figure i'll try it and look for a reason myself.
so far (a few hundred miles later) it's working fine, and it was CHEAP!!!! for 6 bucks, if it lasts 2k miles, it's paid for itself in my mind.
mind you, i would rather not cheap out if it was on a faster scoot, but it's a spree.

Take this from a World-Renowned Cheapskate: From what I can gather, you don't want anything stealing what power you have. You got your money's worth out of that six-dollar belt already, and it hasn't stranded you yet. Maybe keep it as a spare?

That's an easy one to answer. When going around the pulley, especially a small pulley and scooters run small pulleys, there is less power loss around those tight turns with a cogged belt because it bends easier. With a car engine you have power coming out your ears so a a fraction of a horsepower loss means nothing but on a hurtin' for horsepower scooter it does mean something.
