'84 Spree-Starts, runs, dies - carb just cleaned by pro

It actually started RIGHT UP last nite...then promptly quit. If I cranked it repeatedly (a few seconds @ a time) it would eventually start/stop. If I held the throttle open, it would run a little longer then die. A lot of gas comes out exhaust and ends up on the floor after these episodes.

This is w/my 'test gas tank'. The only way to get gas into the carb when hooked to the petcock is to suck on the vac tube. I removed the tank and petcock and gas flowed freely...it's not a tank issue.

New petcock will need ordered.

It's once again filling the cylinder w/gas w/the 2nd carb...the starter slows down, I pull the plug, which is soaked, and run the starter for a few secs w/a rag over the top of the engine to soak up some of the fuel while it empties out.

I checked the spark and it arcs between the tip and the head @ least 1/2" that I read was good.

Checked compression: 115, which is OK. Manual states 113 minimum.



Since I can't get it to run for more than a couple of seconds, I'm not able to adjust the idle...it's not getting warmed up.

Your carb is flooding over. Do it again.

If the reeds were bad enough to kill it while running, he would never get it started. He has carb flooding issues.

Wanted to say THANKS to all that responded. It's running properly...hopefully for the summer @ least.

I'm not going to say what obvious thing we overlooked , but reading the manual for the 3rd time lined out the error of our ways.

We had the flipping Vac/fuel lines reversed from the petcock to the carb/Intake!

No, I don't know how we overlooked it either.

(And you didn't catch my hint: "...lined out.." )

But that explains why the fuel was ending up in cylinder, not the carb, I believe.

Now, where's that rock........

As I read thru the previous post, I mentally reversed the statement and it came out..."out-lined".....then I realized it said "lined out"......Yes, I did fail to catch the hint even though I found the statement to not sound just right.....Thanx for coming clean......and hope your scoot serves you well for many moons..................
