Although we refer to the af16e as a "dio", it actually is not a dio.
Because the af18 is the "true" dio.
Can anyone explain to me the mechanical differences between the two??
Don't get me wrong, i'm plenty happy with my af16e.
Enough can be done with it to make my spree a missile.
Far faster than a spree should really go.
Give me a list of the differences between the various members of the honda "af" engine family.
Help me figure out what parts cannot be moved from one to the other.
I need to know.
Just explain the differences if you know what they are.

The af16 is a true dio engine also.It took a long time for it to hit the states because of emissions issues. The af16 came on the honda tact and is basicly the first dio engine. The af18 came after the af16.The af and number is in numeric order so that will tell you what came first. The difference is that the case on the variator side for the af18 is smaller so a very small crank seal if using a aftermarket crank will be needed.also the crank shaft for the af18 where the seal is,is smaller.thats why japan blocks are called small crank engines.as for mechanical they are the same.all the parts available for these engines can be used on the U.S version dio.Basicly thats what the parts your buying for the af16 is the japan vertical dio engines.

would the SYM DD50 block be closer to the AF16 or the AF18. i have read that the AF18 has bigger stock boost ports than the 16 among other slight differences.

Does the DD50 block have the same or bigger boost ports that the AF16?

whats the advantage of the AF16 vs the DD50 motor? if there is any.

There is a slight difference in the final drive set. One tooth off. All the af18 engines use a double ball bearing transmission gear cover. Only some of the af16 engines use that.
