Gyro Starter
So I've picked up my TG50 Gyro and the starter is boned. The brushes are chipped and severely worn down. Also, a phenolic pad that the brushes glide on is MIA. Wondering if the Spree starter is similar enough to cannibalize for parts. The motor housing looks very similar, but I'm not sure on the mounting boss. also, I believe Spree starters run counterclockwise (when looking at the shaft) and the Gyro starters run clockwise, but I'm not positive yet. Has anyone rebuilt one of these starters, or do they have one they'd be willing to sell?

Re: Gyro Starter
Spree starter parts work in the Gyro. I recall the Armature, brushes - about everything but the can and drive output side (mounting plate). So do 85-87 Aero and 88-93 Elite SA50 (The Elite SB50 I've never tried..)
--- More on Aero/Elite starters for Gyros ---
The Aero and Elite starters mentioned have a mounting plate which fits the TG50 and NN50 Gyros. But their rotation is reversed.
Mounting plate differences:

The Aero and Elite starters mentioned have a mounting plate which fits the TG50 and NN50 Gyros. But their rotation is reversed.
Mounting plate differences:
- Gyro has been machined to accept an oil seal and is assembled with one. Gyro's starter runs inside the oil filled gearbox, and does get oil on it. On the Aero and Elite starters the drive is into the dry belt case, and do not have a seal.
- The power connection is narrower on the Gyro. The tab needs to be filed a bit to fit the Gyro harness.
Re: Gyro Starter
Is there any way to eyeball the proper orientation of the starter motor can during assembly? The starter came fully disassembled in a gourmet cookie carton. I've figured most of it out, but I still have some mystery bits.
Trying to leave it be until I finish rebuilding the '78 JC Penny Pinto I have on deck and finish my '87 Elite 80 once the parts arrive. Still, I'm *this* close to pulling FailSpree's starter (which works) and using it to fix the Gyro.

Re: Gyro Starter
Yes - Mitsuba made it goof proof for factory assembly. If you line up the tabs on the can with the drive side mounting plate, you can't get it incorrect. When the can is not lined up its obvious. That's why you need to grind the tabs when you want to 'override' the assembly aid and put the can '180 degrees' off. Only goof possible is to put the wrong model's can on. That will reverse the rotation direction. Is there any way to eyeball the proper orientation of the starter motor can during assembly? The starter came fully disassembled in a gourmet cookie carton. Thanks Brad!bradthreee wrote:Congrats on the TG50 and very useful info in here.
I kinda feel like I'm cheating on the Spree by back-burnering it, but I don't feel too guilty as everything but the chassis plastics, wiring loom, frame and rims seems to be broken. I preordered for Taz's next BBK, so it'll be a while before I can build out that motor I got from you anyway (reminds me, I should order the JaingWayne pipe too...)
BTW, do you have a bum starter you'd be willing to sell? I'd take a working one, but I'd hate to take apart a good one to just get the phenolic (or FRP) plates out of it.

Re: Gyro Starter
crap i thought this thread was about making sandwiches and ingredients used.
i was going to suggest some type of vessel-(bread) and maybe a few dill pickle slices(long way) and maybe a slice or two of probaloney cheese...
is it a "geerow" or a "ji-roe" ?

Gyro = Tasty!
Gyro S = Comes with extra tzatziki sauce!
I wonder if Kraft foods, makers of Lunchables, would nab this concept?

Re: Gyro Starter
Al - I've located a starter with the insulators, send a pm if you would like them.az_slynch wrote:Also, a phenolic pad that the brushes glide on is MIA.
P.S. Take a look at the stub of a brush left lying near the blue starter power tab. That's really worn out.

Awesome! Those are exactly what I'm looking for!
And Jeebus, that brush is DONE. Mine aren't that worn, but they aren't pretty either.

Re: Gyro Starter
Here's a photo, Gyro on the left, 88-93 Elite SA50 style starter connector on the right. Filing makes the area by the bolt hole pretty thin. Best to keep the stock Gyro starter plate.mousewheels wrote:The power connection is narrower on the Gyro. The tab needs to be filed a bit to fit the Gyro harness.
I think the connector difference was intentional to keep the starters from getting accidentally installed on the wrong scooter.

Re: Gyro Starter
I have all the parts I need now, thanks to Mouse and Jack's Small Engines. Cleaned all the corrosion and trash out of the motor can and the base plate and dressed the commutator.
One question: one of the old starter brush leads appears to have spot-welded to the post on the base plate. If I remove this lead, can I solder the replacement on or does it have to be spot-welded too?

Re: Gyro Starter
Easy fix is to cut off the old brush leaving enough of the pigtail to solder to the new brush pigtail. Pre-check that the splice iis where it won't interfere with the brush motion or pigtail routing...az_slynch wrote:One question: one of the old starter brush leads appears to have spot-welded to the post on the base plate.
