VeeDub Gasket Research

Greetings:

Based on word from VeeDubh, I recently looked into compatibility between AF16/18 exhaust port and gaskets from Vaunted Vintage Venerated Vee-Dub air-cooled engines. One O'Reilly's in Deepinnaharta had a dusty set on a back shelf, agreed to pop the box open to let me have a look:

Specs taken from Ultra-Fragile JW "Eggshell" gasket are recorded in the 5th post down on page 2 here.
I have yet to install them physically, but looks pretty much close enough, even if I have to round out the stud-holes one way or 't'other. The kit comes with a bunch of siamesed intake gaskets and "pre-heater" seals, as well as a couple of copper donuts of undetermined size. However 4 usable gaskets for $15 seems fair enough. Plus, they're Fel-Pro, the Gaskets Professionals Trust.
That or see your Authorized Volkswagen Retailer today, if "today" is in 1967!

Good work all - With a name "VeeDub" it had to be the word :bowrofl:

BTW - I think these may be similar, if a large supply is needed :)
$0.79 each

If this is good enough (missing the internal ring?) they are 4 for $2.25

Been running these for quite a while, works perfect.

Just make sure your bore is big and so is the exhaust ;)

808BMW posted a pic in aerorobs build of the VW gaskets. pic below shows one installed on Malossi 72cc jug. Cost is only $.50 each. Fits perfect and exhaust studs keep it centered. I have extras if anyone can't find them and want to run one.

Cheaper still seems to be RockAuto.

Only 21 cents or buy 10 and save 10 cents!!!

Not unless you have a big bore with bigger pipe. the stud holes would end up on the part of gasket that "squishes" to seal.

So is there a difference in quality of these gaskets or one supplier that is better than another? Any to stay away from?

Greetings:

Just don't install the turquoise crushed eggshell one that comes with a lot of the Asian pipes. Otherwise, metal gaskets are metal gaskets, not artificial hearts. I hacked one out of copper sheet that worked fine for months.

I'd test fitment before throwing it out, my blue pipe NEEDS the thick blue gasket they provide, it really affects the fitment of the pipe.

Greetings:

Good point. One could also stack several metal ones, but life's simpler with one thick one. Trouble is mine exploded during a WOT run. Can you say LOUD? It also runs like le poopage, and puts the bore at risk from inhaling air.

Treat the teal gasket like the eggshell from which it's made.

Hey guys, I'd also like to add the paper gaskets seal better and easier vs. the metal gaskets but the metal gaskets last longer if you aren't the type to be pulling your exhaust off every other day. I guess old VW parts are easier to come by here in Hawaii because we can walk into a bunch of different stores and buy them over the counter lol.

Those thick exhaust gaskets tend to be required nowadays for fitment issues, and they can be reused if you do take your pipe off every week.
