120lb Comp. Scratched Jug, no start

Post by the496rocket »

Working on a spree for a friend, not sure the year, It will not start. With the electric start, it will try to start, cleaned carb, changed oil and gas, has good spark, the thing is that it has 120 lbs of compression, and I found out that there are 3 bad scratches on the cylinder wall. How could it have good compression and not start?

... with scratches on the bore the compression should be lower, unless you've oiled up the wall. Either way a re-bore is in order.

I'm guessing that the exhaust port's plugged up and this is increasing your compression. Check it out. Scratches on the bore, if on the exhaust side, may be from the rings picking up chunks of carbon from the exhaust port and scratching up the wall on that side.

Yeah, its odd. It is acting just like my aero did with 30lbs of comp, trying to start it. I might just buy a whole engine and trans core off ebay and go through it, or just a cylinder, but also, when I was trying to start it, I removed the exhause and hit the kick starter, and a lot of raw gas came out of the exhaust port. So is it getting flooded? and how? I completly disassembled the carb and cleaned it, and checked the bystarter. all good. Thanks for the input.

If it's puking gas the carb is (or was) dripping gas into the crankcase. See if this clears up.

Will it run on starting fluid?

fluid

Post by the496rocket »

I ran on starting fluid at first, then it wouldnt, So it sounds like its flooding itself out. How Can I fix the problem with carb? I noticed that the drain nipple/hose on the bottom of the bowl is completly blocked when the drain screw is tight, open the drain screw, and the hose opens. is the carb flooding? Is that the problem?

The bottom screw is supposed to do that. If gas is coming from the top outlet, your carb is flooding the bowl. Your carb probably still has a dirty idle jet. Also, check the size of your main jet and position of the needle jet. Air filter in place?

My guess is that your plug needs changed if it won't run on starter fluid. How deep are the scratches? I'd be tempted to just buy an overbore kit from VTcycles if it's trashed, rather than used stock parts.

spree

Post by the496rocket »

I talked to my friend that owns the spree, and he said he had it running las about 4 months ago, and you almost had to push to get it going, and it smoked blue like crazy.

I soaked the idle jet in carb cleaner for about a half an hour, it can see light through it good. Can I bolt on one of my spare aero carb to see if it runs? or is it different?

Whats causing the smoke? again, compression is at 120 lbs

wierd :?

If it's been in storage, the bottomend fills with oil from the oiler leaking. A few minutes operation (and a new plug) usually fixes this, as it burns off the oil and fouls the plug in the process.

Aero carb may work. Just try it.

Did you check the oiler operation, the exhaust port, and the air filter?
