86' Slow Acceleration (please give me some ideas)

Post by IMiteBeWrong »

Hey guys.

So, I have 2 Honda Sprees. The 1985 I have runs awesome, when i pull the throttle it revs up quickly from the start and will go quickly all the way until it hits top speed. You can really feel a good amount of UMPH beihind it. Like a healthy Spree should ;P

But my 86' revs up slowly, and doesn't start picking up until after 10mph, from which it accelerates fine the rest of the way to top speed. I've cleaned the carb more times than I can count, I made sure my airbox is well sealed and my air filter is clean and oiled. Today I replaced my piston rings. The cylinder and piston were both in great shape and my compression is around 120. I was really hoping the rings would fix my issue but it hasn't.

I thought... well my exhuast must be restricting me and needs to be cleaned. So I threw it in a hot bed of coals and burned some carbon out and still.... No Change.

Ive read so many posts about this issue and I just cant figure it out!

All I can say is my 85' revs WAY more quickly than my 86' (by rev i mean jumps RPM's)

If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Your 1986 Spree sounds like a normal Spree. Your 1985 sounds like either a transplant motor or a Big Bore Kit. Stock Sprees are noted for being sluggish off the line, then around 10 mph being to pull up to tops speed, 28 to 30 mph. My Stock 1985 Spree acts just like your 1986 and I know it is stock as it has never been apart.

85 sprees had lighter trans parts that might have let them rev quicker.

86 sprees had different head designs from 85's

Maybe some one rebulit the 85 with and 86 piston. that makes for a zippy scooter.

Just a piston change would never make that drastic of a difference. It would take either a BBK or a variated engine.

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess I just got lucky on my purchase.

I'm thinking someone probably put a big bore kit in it at some point, because it definitely has the stock engine. It accelerates really fast from 0-30. Kinda throws ya back when you accelerate. And yesterday when i was driving with a friend who has a 150cc he and I noticed I was doing 37+mph (on flat ground) . At that speed you can feel some vibration from the engine through the seat. I've been kinda shrugging my shoulders about it because I originally was thinking this spree was just completely stock and that there was something wrong with my 86'.

I had a stock 85 spree and it would do 28-30mph on level ground (verified by radar). I put the larger tires on it and gained about 3-5mph. I'd say your 85 must be modded in some way. Maybe someone just ported it to improve airflow? Does it have stock jet in it?

I have no idea if it the 85 has a stock jet or not. I've cleaned the carb on it before but didn't notice any difference in jet size from my 86'. I recently hopped on a friends 86' spree and his wasnt quite as fast as my 85' but it accelerated much better than the 86' I have (the one I am having problems with).
I'm almost positive that the acceleration on my 86' is slower than it should be. I know they aren't rockets off the line, but until I hit about 10mph my 86' is really... realllllllly slow. I'm going to tinker with it a little longer and see what I can figure out.

It soundq like to me you might have two different sized belts. I swapped out my napa 7250 which gave my 85 wicked fast acceleration but lower top end for a gates 7240xl which slowed down acceleration up to 10 but drastically increased top end from 27 up to 35 on flat ground.
