Bad Voltage Regulator/Rectifier?

Post by gman75 »

Ok, when I hooked my battery to my spree, with the ignition on, the battery fuse instantly blew. I removed all the electrical components (CDI, starter, starter relay, turn signal relay, bystarter, etc) except the rear taillight and horn. A new fuse worked and the taillight came on. I then started hooking the electrical components up one by one, and everything worked, until I lastly put in the voltage regulator/rectifier and the new fuse blew again.

So there's probably something wrong there, I am trying to do the resistance check on the regulator per the manual. Do I hook up the ohmmeter leads to the regulator unit itself or to the 4 pin harness that connects to it? And can I use the green wire that connects to the battery as "engine ground"

I should also note that, months before, I accidentally wired a battery backwards to the spree and thats why I suspect the regulator unit is fried.

Thats great, you isolated the entire ignition system, thats the way it should be done!

So does anyone know how to do the resistance check on the regulator?

Ah, Elite engine in Spree. Which regulator are you using, the Spree one or the Elite one? Looks like the wiring color is the same (I have the Elite manual in front of me,) can't tell on the actual harness. Red is to batt, green is grd, white is alt field and yellow is alt tap on both.

You usually stuff the test probe in the back of the connector socket. And yes, green *should* be ground.

its a spree regulator. So when you say "connector socket" - does that mean on the harness, or on the regulator unit itself.

Check at the regulator itself, as I read it.

Speaking of elite repair manuals.....

Do you think they will post one up like the other scoots?
