Blew my headlight and instrument lights

Ok, I finally got my spree running. (using the kickstart only, I dont have a battery or voltage regulator)

I noticed only the headlights and instruments lights worked without the battery. However after riding the spree for awhile, it seems I burnt out those lights. Now only the high beam works. Am I not supposed to run the spree without a battery? Does a battery "absorb" the extra voltage coming from the alternator?

well when i had no battery and only my kickstart the lights only worked when i was gassing it down the street. but never in an idle.

if you don't have the voltage regulator that prolly caused you lights to blow
