Why would you permanently engage it? It won't run like that.

If you're in a crunch, you can start a Spree using a drill with a socket. Remove the bendix and leave off the sidecover, reassemble front pulley. Hook up a drill with a socket to fit the front pulley, and spin the engine CW. This should start it up if it's going to. Then you can decide what to do further.

when you say remove the bendix, i thought the bendix was the gear at the top of the starter pinion, i must be wrong because i didnt think you could remove that.

i'm sorry i'm such a noob, but what is a bendix?

The bendix is the shaft with two gears on it; the starter turns the bendix, the bendix has a gear that jumps out and engages the starter ring.

Bendix may be a US only term, the name of the inventor of this type of starter, I believe.

thanks for that, tried the drill start but i can find a socket that fits the pulley nut and that will fit into the drill peice.
